First Drive: 2012 Toyota Camry
Is the 2012 Toyota Camry new and special enough to vanquish the Hyundai Sonata? Is the SE model a poor man's sport sedan? Is Toyota's rebound in J.D. Power & Associates' initial quality rankings, and the company's vindication over specious unintended acceleration claims, enough to warrant purchase consideration? Do you experience headaches, dizziness, or nausea when driven swiftly in a sports car?

If you've answered, "Well, heck, yes!" to any of these questions, get ready for a quiz in which we determine whether you'd notice an all-new seventh-generation model if it used your driveway for a U-turn.

Here are some study materials: Camrys traditionally run two cycles on one platform, and...

First Drive: 2012 Volkswagen Passat VR6
Once upon a time, foreign midsize cars -- compacts by modern standards -- came with four-cylinder engines only. Then they got V-6s, with Honda reluctantly complying last among the major competitors with its Accord in 1995. The tide turned last year, first with the Hyundai Sonata, then its platform sibling the Kia Optima, which each launched only with four-cylinder naturally aspirated and turbo engines. Chevrolet's 2013 Malibu will come with four-cylinder engines only, when it goes on sale early next year. It wouldn't be surprising to see the next Ford Fusion follow suit with naturally aspirated and EcoBoost four engine options. The 2.0-liter TSI four far outsells the V-6 version of the premium...

First Drive: 2011 Nissan Altima 2.5 S Special Edition
Toyota Camry. Honda Accord. Nissan Altima. This Japanese trio has dominated North America's mid-size sedan game for a while now. But recently, the competitive set has grown not only in size (to include the Fusion, Sonata, Malibu, Legacy, Jetta, etc.), but in overall amenities. Long gone are the days when automakers could lure customers with power windows, automatic door locks, and that oh-so-convenient cruise control.

As we noted in our Seven for All Mankind mid-size sedan comparison, Nissan's best selling model lags behind the competition when it comes to standard features. Rather than elongate the Altima's standard feature list, the product planners in Yokohama are continuing their preference...

First Drive: 2011 Kia Optima
Boning up for an automaker-solicited driving event can uncover some telling truths. Take the Kia Optima, for example. It's entering its third generation with the 2011 model year and belongs to the industry's valuable midsize car segment, home to several of the United States' top-selling nameplates. In 2009, the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Malibu, and seven other class competitors tallied 1.54 million sold, a strong presence in a year where just 10.4 million aggregate new vehicles were leased or financed. Only 37,527 of the 1.54 million wore Optima badges. There are reasons for that, and Kia has probably heard 'em all.

If comprising less than 3 percent of...

2011 Hyundai Sonata Test Drive
La Jolla, Calif.—The most important thing about the new Sonata is what it's not—boring. Hyundai has made a habit these days of studying the benchmark in a class of vehicle, and nearly duplicating the style and performance of that car for far less money. The midsize sedan MVP, at least in terms of sales, has traditionally been the Toyota Camry—not the most exciting pony in the barn. So Hyundai could have emulated the Toyota's milquetoast formula. Not so. The new Sonata looks upscale, like a cross between a Mercedes-Benz CLS and a Lexus ES 350. But more importantly, it's roomy, powerful and returns better EPA fuel-economy numbers than most of the midsize sedans in the class. Next time around,...

2011 Hyundai Sonata Preview at the 2009 L.A. Auto Show
The all-new sixth-generation 2011 Hyundai Sonata is the second in Hyundai's so-called 24/7 string of releases, which drops seven all-new models over the course of 24 months. It's also the first to wear the Korean carmaker's new "Fluidic Sculpture" design language, which incorporates near-coupé-like lines as seen in sedans such as the Volkswagen CC, as well as unusual touches (a chrome accent that wraps from the edge of the front headlamp all the way to the tip of the C-pillar). The overall look is dramatic, and perhaps one of the most successful sedan treatments to come out of Korea yet.

Under the Sonata's flowing hood bulges, a new all-aluminum Theta II 2.4-liter four-cylinder promises best-in-class...
