Long Term Update 7: 2010 Suzuki Kizashi GTS
This sedan continues to be a staff favorite, though underrated in the marketplace. Associate online editor Benson Kong notes, "This car should be the poster child for tip-of-the-fingers, effortless shifting. The steering, on the other hand, imparts a completely opposite sensation. It's direct, with a good amount of heft throughout the steering range." It's fuel-efficient, too. Kong continues, "The 2.4-liter engine may be more gas miserly than the EPA lets on. It's rated 20/29 mpg, but with a mix of city and highway driving and what I'd consider moderate applications of throttle, I easily did more than 200 miles with over half a tank to go. I only had to put in 7.24 gallons of 87 octane to top...

First Look: 2013 Chevrolet Malibu
No new model has General Motors more concerned about the success of its launch than the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. The Volt? No, as ground-breaking and politically divisive as that car is, there's little doubt Chevy will be able to sell all of them, from the 10,000 or so expected in the first year to 30,000-40,000 per year as production slowly ramps up.

В The Chevy Malibu was GM's best-selling car last year. These days, there's no upside in describing how successful an automaker is in the truck and SUV business. Midsize and compact sedans, market share-wise, are where it's at, baby. GM has moved up the Chevy Malibu's launch twice, first from fall of '12 to mid-year, and the car has since been fast-tracked...

Long Term Update 6: 2010 Suzuki Kizashi GTS
Once you get to know the Kizashi, you'll like it. Value-packed and honest, ours has features like an iPod jack, making it easy to control music through the stereo system, and Bluetooth. The cabin isn't all that exciting, but the car as a whole continues to win over the staff.

Notes senior editor Jonny Lieberman, "The more I drive the Kizashi, the more I like it, especially when you consider that our well-appointed tester stickers for under $23,000, about what you'd spend for an equally powerful and similarly equipped Jetta. Of course, the Jetta now has a torsion-beam rearend-fine for most people, but the Kizashi is the better handler. And in fact, the better car." This is arguably the best...

Long Term Update 5: 2010 Suzuki Kizashi GTS
When associate online editor Scott Evans got behind the wheel of the Kizashi for a trip to Laguna Seca, he was impressed. "The ride is comfortable and the interior is well isolated, especially for the price. Steering feel is pretty good and the brakes bite well. The shifter isn't my favorite; it's a bit ropey, and second gear is temperamental, but it's far from the worst I've driven.

"The quality of build, design, and materials all around is great considering the price tag. It's hard to believe this car costs only $24,000. A competitor would easily add several thousand dollars onto that. I'd love it if Suzuki would offer a real sport model with just a little more power. This is so close to...

Long Term Update 4: 2010 Suzuki Kizashi GTS
While several staffers drove a pair of Kizashis through Japan, Russia, Canada, and the U.S., our long-termer stayed home. On one staffer's drive, it suffered minor damage when a bit of debris became lodged in one of the front fenderwells. The Kizashi continues to impress with top-notch interior styling, sporty character, and ergonomically sound cabin.

The solid chassis and pleasant ride are welcome surprises, and the overall impression is that this car is a smart option for people who want a midsize sedan with personality. Its engine isn't exactly the gutsiest, but the Kizashi offers a tremendous amount of character in a small, easy to maneuver, and fun package. And the world-traveling Kizashis...

Long Term Update 3: 2010 Suzuki Kizashi GTS
"Not five minutes into my drive home, I had to pull over and double-check our Kizashi's Monroney," logs assistant Web producer Carlos Lago. "I was sure that what had started as an inexpensive car had been optioned to near $30,000, what with the Bluetooth, auto up/down front windows, sunroof, iPod connectivity, attractive interior, and so on. But, nope, it's still under $24,000. Color me impressed.

"While the Kizashi is no compact, it feels like one; it's very easy to maneuver through narrow streets, alleys, parking lots, etc. Credit also goes to its enjoyable handling tendencies; turn-in is nice, and there's decent weight in the steering. The shifter has a positive feel: You'd never second-guess...

Long Term Update 2: 2010 Suzuki Kizashi GTS
"I dug the Kizashi when I drove it at the launch in Portland, Oregon, last October," says associate Web editor Kirill Ougarov, "and I'm glad my memory does not betray me. Though not the fastest thing in the world, it's a really fun car to drive if you're not hopelessly addicted to speed. The engine doesn't mind being revved to the max, the shifter is easy to work, and the chassis is solid enough to be fun in the twisties."

Contributing editor Mike Connor agrees: "The Kizashi goes down the road quite decently. Clean and tidy inside and out too. You don't see or feel any 'penalty box' red flags, and that's saying a lot. This Suzuki feels like a premium piece; it has the high-value/fun-to-drive...

Long Term Update 1: 2010 Suzuki Kizashi GTS
Executive editor Edward Loh spent a few days in the Kizashi GTS and observes, "For scooting about town and riding commuter traffic, the Kizashi is perfect. The six-speed manual is good -- not great, but sporty enough to encourage heel-toeing and other shenanigans. I enjoy wringing out the four-banger, and it makes me even happier to see mpg in the mid- to high-20s when doing so."

"From a driving perspective, the Kizashi reminds of the small cars Honda used to do -- maybe some 'born from motorcycles' in the tightness of the chassis and the way the I-4 revs up. Inside reminds me of a Korean/German cross-blackout style like a VW or Audi, but thoughtful, modern, and a bit down-market like the Koreans....

Arrival: 2010 Suzuki Kizashi GTS
"The best car Suzuki has ever built." Every staffer who steps out of our latest long-term fleet member says the same thing. The Kizashi is head and shoulders above any previous offering from the company. Suzuki made a bold move giving this car a name that literally means "something good is coming," so testing that claim was only natural.

The car that turned up in the Motor Trend garage is a Vivid Red GTS model with a 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine sending 170 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed manual transmission on its way to the front wheels. Together, they gave us a 0-to-60 time of 7.7 seconds and a quarter mile of 15.9 seconds at 86.7 mph.

Included on our Kizashi...
