First Test: 2010 Subaru Legacy GTk
Allow me to break down the intriguing mechanical cocktail you see here: Take one U.S.-spec Subaru Outback chassis, add a dash of JDM-inspired nose, an ounce of custom roof racks, two teaspoons of tinted taillights, and a measure of extended rear spoiler. Bolt in a single mildly tuned U.S.-market Legacy 2.5GT powertrain and a JDM Legacy tS suspension, shake vigorously for six months, and, VOILA!, you have yourself a bona fide Frankenwagon fit for SEMA's Las Vegas Convention Center floor.

Easy enough, right? Maybe not...

As the story goes, Subaru commissioned Specialized Vehicles Inc. to create a 2009 SEMA show car that would demonstrate the versatility and coolness of sport wagons. Executives...

Verdict: 2010 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited
Long before taking the keys to our Azurite Blue Pearl 2010 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited (our 2010 Sport/Utility Vehicle of the Year, by the way), we decided to forgo ordering its 3.6R flat-six sibling packing 256 ponies and a traditional five-speed auto. At first, it was a move that had some staffers wishing for more Boxer might.

Once we received the Outback, doubters quickly changed their opinions. Entries praising the crossover's 2.5-liter flat-four and its smooth Lineartronic continuously variable transmission poured into our logbook after only a few days in the fleet. "The four-banger has plenty of grunt," wrote associate online editor Kirill Ougarov. With steering-wheel-mounted paddles...

Long Term Update 6: 2010 Subaru Outback
Senior editor Jonny Lieberman was impressed with the way this Subaru has survived its increase in size: "Even though the Outback has ballooned up to an SUV, the steering is still responsive and sporty." There are some gripes about the interior. The cream-colored leather shows dirt. In addition, many think it's silly to have to toggle through a couple menu screens just to cancel the nav.

"A better solution would be a "nav cancel" button on the main screen. It also seems silly that most of the infotainment features are locked out when the Subaru's in motion. The front passenger can't control the nav while the driver figures out where to go, and a person driving solo can easily spend too much...

Long Term Update 5: 2010 Subaru Outback
Editor-At-Large Ron Kiino took the long-term Outback on a fishing trip to California's Eastern Sierra and utilized the Subaru's 71.3 cubic feet of cargo for hauling two duffel bags, five rods, a couple pairs of waders and boots, two ice chests, and two float tubes.

"From the town of Bishop up to Mammoth Lakes, Highway 395 climbs nearly 4000 feet in elevation over a 40-mile stretch, a grade that separates the weak from the strong. At first, I left the Outback's CVT in Drive, just to see how the powertrain would respond. As CVTs tend to do, the Subaru's kept the revs nicely in the powerband, but I did need to come on and off throttle more than I liked. A quick grab of the left steering-wheel-mounted...

Long Term Update 4: 2010 Subaru Outback
At 15,000 miles, the Outback got its second maintenance service, a $364.88 job that included an oil change, full inspection, tire rotation, and replacement of engine and cabin air filters. Associate Web editor Kirill Ougarov, who's remodeling his condo, used the Outback to haul some new goods.

"Reached for the outer limits of the Outback's cargo-carrying capacity last night when I picked up some laminate flooring. Thirty-six boxes fit surprisingly easily into the back with the rear seats folded, along with nine rolls of foam and three rolls of plastic. The added 1150 pounds of weight sat squarely on the rear axle, with the predictable result of the car's tail squatting and reduced steering...
