"WOW!" says photo intern Mike Shaffer. Our young photographer just unbelted from a 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI after a spirited run on some of Southern California's most curvaceous paths. While the STI is capable of giving Munich's best sweaty brows and malodorous armpits, Shaffer's exclamation of surprise stems from the vast differences between the STI and another car he had just driven. Prior to jumping in the STI, he drove the same path in the Subie's well-established archrival: the 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Special Edition.

One of the biggest complaints with our long-term 2007 Nissan Sentra SE-R, which we sent home about 18 months ago, was its fun-sucking CVT. The gearless gearbox did not endear itself to our staffers, who were perplexed by its inclusion in what was supposed to be a sporty sedan. This gearbox conundrum does not exist in the SE-R Spec V, however, as it gets a proper three-pedal six-speed manual. So, with the gearbox issue solved, does the Sentra become a legitimate sport-compact player?

Clearly, the problem with the third-generation, hatchback-only version of Subaru's WRX STI was its excessive rear visibility and cargo capacity. Yet none of the innumerable complaints about the racer mentioned these traits. No, everyone simply called it ugly. We instead saw its versatility as the car's primary attribute and told the complainers to cry a river, build a bridge, and jump a rally car over it. Subaru, on the other hand, listened: The 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI can now be had as a sedan. While it's heavier and there's a wing in the rearview, it's also very good.

But despite not being able to afford the STI, lately the WRX folks have been satisfied. Problem is, if you frequently need to transport adults in the back seat or haul a jumbo load of gear in the trunk, it's less than ideal, due to 33.5 inches of rear legroom and 11.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity (WRX sedan).
