Comparison: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 vs. 2011 BMW X5 M vs. 2011 Porsche Cayenne Turbo
These days, defining a sport/utility vehicle is hard. Just about anything top-heavy that necessitates the slight lifting of a passenger's leg for entry usually qualifies, thanks in part to the introduction of car-based crossovers. There are still a handful of vehicles that combine sport and utility to the fullest extent imaginable, clearing up any confusion when these three letters come to mind. We've rounded up three of these -- the 555-horsepower BMW X5 M, 500-horsepower Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and 465-horsepower Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. We'll call them Super SUVs -- SuperUVs for brevity -- due to their massive amounts of power, high top speed, surefooted stick, and excellent utility.

First Test: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8
The traditional performance plan for Jeeps was to unbolt, unzip, unsnap, and otherwise dismount every component that wasn't necessary, then mount the biggest knobby tires possible and head for the hills. The SRT guys have gone the opposite direction by throwing technology and fat, sticky Italian tires at a Jeep to create a whole different monster. While the Grand Cherokee SRT8 may not have the precision of its Hemi-fied siblings, it might be even more fun. Throwing this 5200-pound SUV around corners gives you the same guilty pleasure as finishing a meal that earns you a T-shirt.

The big Jeep likes to be manhandled and tossed around. It will respond to smooth inputs, but it will return equal...

Verdict: 2010 Volkswagen Routan SEL
The Volkswagen Routan isn't like every other minivan on the market today -- it's like two other minivans. With the structure of the Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country beneath its shiny new skin, the Routan is a mixture of Teutonic ingenuity and Canadian build quality. The result is a baffling vehicle with both eye-popping improvements over the Chrysler duo and forehead-slapping oversights.

Whether or not you agree with VW's decision to restyle its competitor's minivan for the U.S. market rather than build its own from scratch, the German brand did manage to get at least one thing right about the Routan: This people-mover is better-looking than either Chrysler product. Staffers praised...

First Look: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8
Following the debut of the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, it didn't take long before the questions and the rumors started flying: Will Jeep bring back the Cherokee SRT8? Chrysler's Street and Race Technology team remained quiet through all the speculation and waited until the 2011 New York auto show to deliver its answer in the form of its latest uber-Jeep, the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.

When we tested the first-gen Cherokee SRT8 around California's Willow Springs Raceway back in 2006, we quickly discovered that its 6.1-liter Hemi V-8 -- rated at 420 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque -- helped make it one of the fastest and most agile sport/utilities we had ever tested, outperforming...

2011 Ford Explorer vs. 2011 Dodge Durango
Ford and Dodge both launched all-new seven passenger SUVs within weeks of each other. Despite a tough economy, high gas prices, and the public's seeming fascination with greener, electrified cars, two-thirds of the Big Three feel strongly that a market still exists for the type of vehicles Americans fell head over heels in love with a decade ago. We'll go ahead and say three out of three, as GM will happily sell you a Chevy Traverse. But let's not digress.

In the Dearborn corner you have the 2011 Explorer, once the USA's best-selling SUV, now reborn as a crossover instead of the more familiar body-on-frame truck. In the Auburn Hills corner you have the 2011 Durango, looking much leaner and...

First Test: 2011 Chrysler Town & Country Touring
The minivan segment isn't known for drama, but Chrysler's update of the Town & Country in the nick of time is about as close as it gets. Due to the advent of the excellent new Toyota Sienna and the even more freshly rebaked Honda Odyssey, the languishing Town & Country's game clock has been rapidly winding down to its last precious seconds. Is Chrysler's Hail Mary minivan a game winner? Honestly, no. A game-changer? Well, yes, at least in the sense that an overtime reconsideration of the trio of family boxes from Chrysler, Toyota, and Honda, now definitely seems in order. (The game is made even more interesting with appearance of the new Nissan Quest).

What makes the Town & Country so highly...

First Test: 2011 Nissan Quest
Six short years ago, the minivan segment was thriving. Sales were a million strong and nameplates were as diverse as the sweet selections in a box of See's chocolates. From Japan (Honda Odyssey, Mazda MPV, Nissan Quest, Toyota Sienna) and Korea (Kia Sedona) to the good ol' US of A (Buick Terraza, Chevy Uplander, Chrysler Town & Country, Dodge Caravan, Ford Freestar, Mercury Monterey, Pontiac Montana, Oldsmobile Silhouette, Saturn Relay), the minivan menu offered savory -- and, let's face it, some unsavory -- choices for every mom and dad.

And then something happened. A seed called the three-row crossover was planted, and it sprouted like bamboo on a Miracle-Gro drip. Suddenly, automakers were...

First Drive: 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL-Class
After receiving the invitation to drive the new 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL V-8 variants, we immediately began talking about the big coupes in terms of a comparison test. But we ran into a significant issue: There's nothing to compare a CL against. In practice, the CL is little more than a two-door S-Class, making it the equivalent of a BMW 7 Series Coupe, or a two-door Audi A8. Trouble is, those last two cars don't exist.

What about at the other end of the spectrum? You could argue that the Maserati GranTurismo is little more than a Duoporte, though the two-door Maser is much lighter than the big Merc and much more focused on sport than heartbeat-slowing luxury. There's also the 612 Scaglietti,...
