Comparison: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 vs. 2011 BMW X5 M vs. 2011 Porsche Cayenne Turbo
These days, defining a sport/utility vehicle is hard. Just about anything top-heavy that necessitates the slight lifting of a passenger's leg for entry usually qualifies, thanks in part to the introduction of car-based crossovers. There are still a handful of vehicles that combine sport and utility to the fullest extent imaginable, clearing up any confusion when these three letters come to mind. We've rounded up three of these -- the 555-horsepower BMW X5 M, 500-horsepower Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and 465-horsepower Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. We'll call them Super SUVs -- SuperUVs for brevity -- due to their massive amounts of power, high top speed, surefooted stick, and excellent utility.

First Test: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8
The traditional performance plan for Jeeps was to unbolt, unzip, unsnap, and otherwise dismount every component that wasn't necessary, then mount the biggest knobby tires possible and head for the hills. The SRT guys have gone the opposite direction by throwing technology and fat, sticky Italian tires at a Jeep to create a whole different monster. While the Grand Cherokee SRT8 may not have the precision of its Hemi-fied siblings, it might be even more fun. Throwing this 5200-pound SUV around corners gives you the same guilty pleasure as finishing a meal that earns you a T-shirt.

The big Jeep likes to be manhandled and tossed around. It will respond to smooth inputs, but it will return equal...

Arrival: 2011 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid
We've started a new evaluation process for our long-term vehicles here at Motor Trend, whereby individual editors will effectively "own" the vehicles for all or most of the time we have them in the fleet. The idea is to improve the quality of our long-term reports, to get beyond what can often boil down to a series of impressions, and get to the nitty-gritty of what it's actually like to live with the vehicle under test.

"Owning" our new Porsche Cayenne long-termer might not seem like taking one for the team, but bear with me. I could have ordered the Turbo. After all, a 500-horsepower SUV that'll nail 0-60 in the low 4s and has a claimed top speed of 172 mph sounds wickedly entertaining. But,...

Long Term Update 5: 2011 Mazda2
Overall, I'm still liking the peppy Mazda2, but on a couple of occasions last month, the little green machine fell short. The first time was when planning a trip to Needles, California, a four-hour-plus drive from Los Angeles. There was no way that a female friend, and a guy friend, and I could cram ourselves and enough luggage for a beach weekend into the '2, and when it comes to ride quality, it far from resembles sitting atop a cloud of marshmallow fluff. Plus we didn't quite know how to get where we were going (it has no nav), and on the way back my husband wanted to listen to his beloved Detroit Tigers, and the '2 doesn't have XM satellite radio. Hello, Honda Odyssey.

The second time was...

First Look: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8
Following the debut of the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, it didn't take long before the questions and the rumors started flying: Will Jeep bring back the Cherokee SRT8? Chrysler's Street and Race Technology team remained quiet through all the speculation and waited until the 2011 New York auto show to deliver its answer in the form of its latest uber-Jeep, the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.

When we tested the first-gen Cherokee SRT8 around California's Willow Springs Raceway back in 2006, we quickly discovered that its 6.1-liter Hemi V-8 -- rated at 420 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque -- helped make it one of the fastest and most agile sport/utilities we had ever tested, outperforming...

First Test: 2011 Dodge Durango R/T
This is the Durango that was never meant to be. A sporty SUV made no sense at all to the glorified accountants from Cerberus who ran Chrysler when the 2011 Durango was being developed, so it was never in the product plan. Ironically the bloodless moneymen were, on a purely rational level, correct: Attempting to turn a truck into a sports car is ultimately an exercise in futility. But the car business ain't a rational business. If it were, there'd be no BMW X5, no Infiniti FX56, no Porsche Cayenne.

With its dubs, slammed suspension, and raucous exhaust, the 2011 Dodge Durango R/T may be every bit as pointless as a Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG, but we should all celebrate the fact it exists, because...
