First Drive: 2012 Buick Regal GS
On paper, Buick seems to have applied the rice-rocket treatment to its popular Regal to create this new GS model. It's taken a tiny, 2.0-liter four-cylinder and turbocharged and intercooled the bejeebers out of it to produce 270 horsepower and an even hairier 295 lb-ft of twist; bolted on paving-stone-sized front brake rotors (14.0 inches in diameter, 1.2 inches thick) clamped by impressive-looking Brembo four-piston calipers; starched up the suspension with stiffer springs, anti-roll bars, and (adjustable) Sachs shocks; and dolled up the exterior with more aggressive fascias, rocker panel extensions, and a spoiler. That looks like a recipe for a raucous, rambunctious, torque-steering screaming...

First Test: 2012 Audi A6
It's far from Oscar-worthy, but the "Transporter" series of movies has its share of amazingly insane chase scenes starring an Audi A8. While we wouldn't advise channeling your inner Jason Statham in the all-new 2012 Audi A6, it's a modern urban transporter that will accomplish just about any job you ask of it with style and impressive performance.

Let's get a couple of things out of the way first: price and steering feel. These two bugaboos always seem to come up when discussing a new Audi. Total price for the 2012 Audi A6 3.0 TFSI Quattro Auto Tiptronic Sedan we had in for testing was $71,330. Before your eyes start watering, consider the Bang & Olufsen sound system rings the register at $5900....

First Drive: Honda Fit Shuttle Hybrid
Like much of Japan's industry, Honda's operations were massively disrupted after the March earthquake and tsunami, and new model launches were delayed. The super-sized Fit's debut was knocked back three months, and production temporarily relocated from the earthquake-damaged Saitama plant near Tokyo to Honda's Suzuka plant some 250 miles to the west. Now that things are back on track, we had a chance to take the Shuttle for a spin.

Based on the current model Fit's platform, with its superb center tank layout and low, flat floor, the Fit Shuttle is basically a Fit with a bigger, heavier body. It also inherits the 1.3-liter hybrid and 1.5-liter gas engines. In Japan at least, all models come...

First Drive: 2012 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec
Sure, there's a refined 5.0-liter gas direct-injection V-8 under the hood, coupled to an impressive new house-designed eight-speed automatic transmission. And yes, it makes 429 horsepower and can propel the car from zero to 60 mph in a smidge over five seconds, according to the manufacturer's own tests.

We've long known Hyundai's Tau V-8 could be bored and stroked well past its initial 4.6 liters to as much as 5.4. Hyundai has coaxed enough horsepower out of 5.0 liters, and there are fuel prices and new Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards to consider, so 5038cc ought to suffice for some time to come.

The seat of the pants indicates it accelerates as advertised, and does so smoothly,...

First Drive: 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0
Porsche churns out so many run-out editions of the 911 that collectors must be feeling pretty gouged by now. There's the 911 Carrera 4 GTS, the 911 Black Edition Cabriolet, the 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder. Seems like every combination of spec and paint becomes a model in its own right. We were just waiting for a narrow-body 2WD Turbo Targa Orange Stripe edition.

Instead, along comes the real deal. Not just the last 911, but the ultimate RS, and the roadgoing swan song for the magnificent Mezger flat-six. The 911 GT3 RS 4.0... now that's what we call a collector's car.

It doesn't just contain a mix'n'match of the very best body, aero, and chassis tweaks from the existing GT3 RS and GT2...

opel
First Drive: 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen
A guy named Karl Benz recently filed a patent for this here contraption, something he's calling a "Motorwagen." The idea is that you burn a substance called gasoline through a small internal-combustion engine, and somehow this is roped to two of the three wheels and will magically propel the contraption forward. It will never fly, as surely as my horse's name is Ed.

First of all, where will you get this magical fluid? I'm not saying it doesn't exist -- it actually does, in large quantities, under sand in the Middle East. But what I am saying is that gasoline-powered personal mobility is little more than a pipe dream. Mr. Benz might as well have developed a machine that runs on good intentions!

Now,...

First Look: 2012 Buick Verano
Will Buick repeat its Enclave magic with the Verano? The Enclave shares its platform with the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia. It also shares Buick-GMC dealership floors with the Acadia Denali, a premium crossover that comes with similar sticker prices. Yet GM says there's virtually no cross-shopping between the Enclave and Acadia Denali. Different customers, the company says, so Enclave sales continue to increase, four years into the product cycle.

The Cruze was supposed to be a new-age Chevrolet compact, with premium attributes at a Chevy price. Well-equipped models have pretty nice interiors and a long roster of features. Where is there room for a Buick version? North American market Chevy...

First Look: 2012 Ford C-Max U.S. Spec
Ford expects its share of the growing c-segment, or compact category, in the United States to reach 200,000 units per year in the next couple of years. Yes, it's well on its way even with the current, outdated North American Focus. However, One Ford, which makes universal the vast majority of Ford's front-drive models around the world, will soon expand the next-generation Focus into a number of variants and different bodystyles.

With Ford's retooled, uber-flexible c-car factory online now building the 2012 Ford Focus in Wayne, Michigan, it can afford to gamble on sub-segments that haven't done well here before. Ford product chief Derrick Kuzak says the company can shift production from a slow-selling...
