Verdict: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT
With most cars that come into our fleet, several features receive attention. With others, one particular element becomes the focus of just about everyone on staff. The Mitsubishi Outlander GT falls firmly into the latter category, with most of our year's worth of notes on the crossover focused on the shortcomings of the Rockford Fosgate-sourced infotainment system. A sampling:

"The Outlander's iPod integration leaves much to be desired."

"iPod integration is shameful. USB connection is erratic and unreliable."

"No rotary knobs at all. Does Mitsu really expect the user to push the Up/Down toggle, oh, 147 times to browse sat-radio channels?"

"The dial works, everyone knows it, and because...

Long Term Update 5: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT
The Oulander GT is another value-minded crossover in the garage, this one with Evo-like personality and styling. It's also one of the very few vehicles on the market today with a tailgate that uses a flipdown bottom half-door, making it easy to load gear. But editors are not thrilled with the head unit.

Why can't Mitsubishi use knobs? The buttons that are there don't seem well organized. In addition, the iPod system is unpredictable; sometimes it isn't able to read the iPod, sometimes it takes 15-20 minutes to start playing music, and sometimes it works just fine after about a minute of "reading" -- but when you get back in the vehicle after it has been shut off, the system has to start reading...

Long Term Update 4: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT
Most of the people who have driven the Outlander GT have had positive comments about this compact sport/utility. One noted, "the Evo-inspired nosejob has done a great job of giving the Outlander some much-needed character. Other than the absence of a telescoping steering column, this loaded variant actually seems like a decent bargain." But at over $33,000, it isn't exactly the least expensive crossover in this category.

That said, it does have some features that are hard to find in a compact SUV, the most notable of which is the two-part tailgate. "The down-folding portion of the mini-tailgate creates a flat load floor (and can double as a seating surface), making it easy to load bulky items...

Long Term Update 3: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT
"Not a bad daily driver," notes assistant Web producer Scott Evans. "The V-6 looks weak on paper, but it actually feels pretty sprightly even with three adults on board. My rear-seat passengers appreciated the sliding and reclining second row that offers ample legroom even with tall front-seat passengers. Big thanks to Mitsubishi's lawyers for letting us have a navigation/infotainment system that can be operated while the vehicle is in motion."

Meanwhile, photographer Julia LaPalme picked the following nit: "I paired my phone to the Bluetooth, and no matter how many times I received a call, the shrill ring the car makes when I get an incoming call always startles me. It is such a high-pitched,...

First Test: 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport SE AWD
Mitsubishi isn't a name you hear much, but the new 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport could change that. We recently sampled the new compact crossover and came away impressed. Now, we've had a chance to put one through the paces on our test track and see how it really stacks up against the competition.

As we noted in our First Drive, the Outlander Sport's 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine isn't especially impressive on paper. Offering 148 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque, it's down a minimum of 20 horsepower against every other vehicle in its competitive set. Our tester was equipped with a continuously variable automatic (a five-speed manual is optional) and Mitsubishi's Super-All Wheel Control...

Comparison: 2011 Mini Countryman vs 2011 Nissan Juke
As is normal when the Germans launch a car that doesn't obviously slot into one of the decades-old market segments, the manufacturer will tell us it has invented a whole new kind of car. So it is with the Mini Countryman -- a 'compact sports activity vehicle', apparently. Like, doh. How exactly is this a new category? Toyota RAV4? Kia Soul? Mitsubishi Outlander Sport? In the real world, the Countryman can't succeed by being a new invention. It has to succeed by being better than the opposition.

Well being a Mini, at least it has performance on its side, with an uprated version of the familiar Cooper S engine (Valvetronic throttle-less induction is added to the existing direct-injection and...

First Drive: 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
Mitsubishi? They still make those? Why yes, yes they do, as any Evo fan will be more than happy to tell you. The Japanese automaker has been hiding in plain sight in the U.S. market for years and is sending up flare named the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport to remind us that the brand is still here and it's plenty capable of making good cars.

Don't they already make an Outlander? Right again, and that's the idea behind Mitsubishi's branding strategy in the U.S. Just as the "Lancer family" ranges from a $14,000 people mover to a $42,000 performance machine, so too will the "Outlander family" cover a range of SUVs and crossovers meeting a variety of needs. Where the Outlander is a seven-passenger...

Long Term Update 1: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT
According to assistant Web producer Carlos Lago, "The Outlander's iPod integration leaves much to be desired. Every time you start the car, even if the iPod is and has been connected for days, the audio system takes as long as a minute to 'Read' before it will play music. It won't start mid-song, either. It's as if the Outlander thinks it's the first time the iPod was plugged in on every single startup. The system is slow while switching between tracks, accessing playlists, and navigating through submenus." While he doesn't remark on the iPod integration, associate Web editor Kirill Ougarov does like the Outlander's split tailgate. "The down-folding portion of the tailgate can double as a seating...

First Drive: 2011 Nissan Juke
Part SUV, part sporty coupe, the 2011 Juke brings Nissan into the exploding small-crossover arena, the fourth largest segment in the U.S. and one that continues to grow at an alarming rate. Other automakers are setting their sights on this segment, too. When the Juke goes on sale this fall, it will face off with such fresh faces as Mini Countryman and Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, as well as a group of established players that includes Scion xB, Kia Soul, and Suzuki SX4. We recently had the opportunity to drive a pre-production all-wheel-drive Juke around the mountains near Malibu, and found its dynamics to be about as entertaining as its styling is shocking.

 Based on Nissan's global-B platform,...
