First Drive: 2012 Mitsubishi i
Many years ago I visited my wealthy cousin Sheldon in Montreal. He'd just purchased an $18 million jet. Hey, I said he was wealthy. Being a good socialist college student, I said something to the effect of, "Shelly, you bourgeoisie pig, why in the hell would you spend $18 million on a jet?!?" He smiled and said, "Jonny, remember when you were a kid and you learned to ride a bike and suddenly your world was this big?" He set his hands about six inches apart. "Then you got your drivers license and suddenly your world became this big?" he said as his hands went shoulder-width apart. "Well, I can fly from New York to Honolulu on one tank of gas." Sheldon spread his arms out all the way. "My world...

Verdict: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT
With most cars that come into our fleet, several features receive attention. With others, one particular element becomes the focus of just about everyone on staff. The Mitsubishi Outlander GT falls firmly into the latter category, with most of our year's worth of notes on the crossover focused on the shortcomings of the Rockford Fosgate-sourced infotainment system. A sampling:

"The Outlander's iPod integration leaves much to be desired."

"iPod integration is shameful. USB connection is erratic and unreliable."

"No rotary knobs at all. Does Mitsu really expect the user to push the Up/Down toggle, oh, 147 times to browse sat-radio channels?"

"The dial works, everyone knows it, and because...

First Drive: 2012 Volkswagen Golf R
The questions start almost as soon as the 2012 Golf R presentation begins.

Why doesn't it have more power?
Why target the Subaru WRX STI and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution?
Why does it cost so much?
And why do the Euros get all the fun stuff (again)?

Let's take it from the top.

"This will be the most powerful Golf ever offered," says Andres Valbuena, VW's Golf product manager. "The last was the 250-horsepower Golf R32 [released in 2008]. The 2012 Golf R will have more power and greater fuel efficiency."

How much power? The exact output has yet to be determined, but the Golf R should make around 260 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque for North American markets. That's a huge bump in output...

First Drive: 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer ES
When thinking of the Mitsubishi Lancer, most car enthusiasts envision a muscular Evolution X charging through a remote mountain pass. While the Evo hogs the spotlight--and the imaginations of car nuts -- it is the humble, less aggressive Lancer that serves as the halo car's foundation and rules the three-diamond's annual sales sheets. In 2010, the base Lancer accounted for 46% of Mitsubishi's total U.S. sales; the Evo only 6%.

For all of its sales significance, the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer ES we recently took for a spin doesn't feel like an automaker's pride, joy, or breadwinner for a number of reasons, particularly in the ES trim. True, the edgy shark-face mug has gained a lot of good and bad...

Comparison: 2011 Subaru WRX STI vs. 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Special Edition
"WOW!" says photo intern Mike Shaffer. Our young photographer just unbelted from a 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI after a spirited run on some of Southern California's most curvaceous paths. While the STI is capable of giving Munich's best sweaty brows and malodorous armpits, Shaffer's exclamation of surprise stems from the vast differences between the STI and another car he had just driven. Prior to jumping in the STI, he drove the same path in the Subie's well-established archrival: the 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Special Edition.

"Compared to the Evo, the STI just feels sooo much heavier," Shaffer notes. "It understeers more than you'd want. But it makes up for slower cornering speeds...

Long Term Update 5: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT
The Oulander GT is another value-minded crossover in the garage, this one with Evo-like personality and styling. It's also one of the very few vehicles on the market today with a tailgate that uses a flipdown bottom half-door, making it easy to load gear. But editors are not thrilled with the head unit.

Why can't Mitsubishi use knobs? The buttons that are there don't seem well organized. In addition, the iPod system is unpredictable; sometimes it isn't able to read the iPod, sometimes it takes 15-20 minutes to start playing music, and sometimes it works just fine after about a minute of "reading" -- but when you get back in the vehicle after it has been shut off, the system has to start reading...

Comparison: 2013 Ford Focus Electric vs. 2011 Nissan Leaf
Not that long ago, electric-powered vehicles were little more than rolling science experiments. Everybody had one, but no one seemed to be serious about them. Not anymore. With gas prices spiraling ever upward and governments around the globe pressing automakers for more efficient lineups, seemingly every car company on the planet is breaking their legs jumping on the EV bandwagon.

Nissan is the first major automaker to deliver the juice in the form of the Nissan Leaf, a mass-market, all-electric vehicle you'll be able to buy from your local Nissan dealer soon. (The first 2011 Leafs hit customer garages just before the close of 2010.) It's a quirky little hatch, but Nissan essentially delivered...

Long Term Update 4: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT
Most of the people who have driven the Outlander GT have had positive comments about this compact sport/utility. One noted, "the Evo-inspired nosejob has done a great job of giving the Outlander some much-needed character. Other than the absence of a telescoping steering column, this loaded variant actually seems like a decent bargain." But at over $33,000, it isn't exactly the least expensive crossover in this category.

That said, it does have some features that are hard to find in a compact SUV, the most notable of which is the two-part tailgate. "The down-folding portion of the mini-tailgate creates a flat load floor (and can double as a seating surface), making it easy to load bulky items...

Long Term Update 3: 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander GT
"Not a bad daily driver," notes assistant Web producer Scott Evans. "The V-6 looks weak on paper, but it actually feels pretty sprightly even with three adults on board. My rear-seat passengers appreciated the sliding and reclining second row that offers ample legroom even with tall front-seat passengers. Big thanks to Mitsubishi's lawyers for letting us have a navigation/infotainment system that can be operated while the vehicle is in motion."

Meanwhile, photographer Julia LaPalme picked the following nit: "I paired my phone to the Bluetooth, and no matter how many times I received a call, the shrill ring the car makes when I get an incoming call always startles me. It is such a high-pitched,...

First Drive: 2010 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V
One of the biggest complaints with our long-term 2007 Nissan Sentra SE-R, which we sent home about 18 months ago, was its fun-sucking CVT. The gearless gearbox did not endear itself to our staffers, who were perplexed by its inclusion in what was supposed to be a sporty sedan. This gearbox conundrum does not exist in the SE-R Spec V, however, as it gets a proper three-pedal six-speed manual. So, with the gearbox issue solved, does the Sentra become a legitimate sport-compact player?

Mostly. Here's the breakdown:

On the powertrain front, the Spec V compares favorably to the competition. Its 2.5-liter I-4 makes 200 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. These figures handily beat the likes...
