First Test: 2012 Ford Explorer EcoBoost
Last time we had our hands on the new Ford Explorer, it finished sixth out of six in our seven-row SUV comparison test. Yes, friends, dead last. But that car was a preproduction vehicle, and quite literally fell apart on us. This time around, by dint of its new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, I think the Explorer would have placed lower. Like below a city bus. Yes, my kneecaps are thankful Harry Bennett is dead.

"It's just such inefficient packaging," crowed bossman Angus MacKenzie as we stood contemplating Ford's big-on-the-outside, cramped-on-the-inside kiddie hauler. What exactly is so wrong with it? "It's intellectually dishonest," continued Angus. "It looks roomy, but it's not. It looks sporty,...

Comparison: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 vs. 2011 BMW X5 M vs. 2011 Porsche Cayenne Turbo
These days, defining a sport/utility vehicle is hard. Just about anything top-heavy that necessitates the slight lifting of a passenger's leg for entry usually qualifies, thanks in part to the introduction of car-based crossovers. There are still a handful of vehicles that combine sport and utility to the fullest extent imaginable, clearing up any confusion when these three letters come to mind. We've rounded up three of these -- the 555-horsepower BMW X5 M, 500-horsepower Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and 465-horsepower Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. We'll call them Super SUVs -- SuperUVs for brevity -- due to their massive amounts of power, high top speed, surefooted stick, and excellent utility.

First Test: 2012 Nissan Versa SL
The Nissan Versa has always been marketed as one of the cheapest new cars in America -- a budget-conscious consumer's delight. The all-new 2012 Nissan Versa is no exception. Nissan's ads proclaim it as having "the most space per dollar of any car in America," comparing its rear legroom to that of a Mercedes E-Class. In an increasingly competitive segment, is that really enough?

The top-of-the-line 2012 Nissan Versa SL we tested starts at $16,320. For that scratch you get a pretty well-equipped car, with front foglights, alloy wheels, 60/40 rear seats, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, cruise control, power windows and locks, and Nissan's CVT. Step down to the SV at $15,320 and you lose the alloys,...

First Test: 2012 Fiat 500
"Delightful." Thus spoke Kim Reynolds, our handling and ride quality guru, when I asked him how Fiat's ballsy little 500 was to drive around our patented figure eight. Mr. Reynolds' seal of approval is high praise indeed for the diminutive newcomer, as I've seen Kim yawning while climbing out of ultracars worth several hundred thousand dollars. No, really. So why the big love for such a tiny car? Well, in a teensy-weensy Italian nutshell, the 500 deserves it.

Technically speaking, the 500 fits into the A-segment, along with cars like the Smart ForTwo and the upcoming Toyota iQ. But the Fiat's much bigger than the Smart and close to within half a foot of a Mini Cooper in most dimensions, even...

First Drive: 2010 Fiat 500C Abarth
First, the back story. Fiat, the Big One of the Italian auto industry, owns a large portion of Ferrari, all of Maserati, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia...plus Abarth. Originally founded in the late 1940s by an Austrian, Karl Abarth, the company specialized for decades in making parts that made Fiats faster. The hoods of rear-engined 500 racers from the 1960s were always propped open, usually to make room for stuff from Abarth.

Having acquired Abarth, Fiat has spent the last three years remodelling the brand. It's now established in Europe and beyond as Fiat's specialist partner for tuning kits, ready-to-go race cars, and premium-priced performance models. (Some 22,000 Abarth-branded cars have been...

The newest Bmw Z4 doesn't have an M-badge anywhere on it. But with twin-turbo inline six uprated to 335 hp, this two-door is as close as you can get to ultimate Bmw power and poise in a roadster.

2011 Electric Fiat 500 Pic: 2010 Detroit Auto Show
Yes, the Fiat 500 is coming to America. Could an all-electric version be far behind? Apparently not. Fiat showed this all-electric version of the FIAT 500 at Detroit. Some say it will arrive here within two years.

Execs, Not Cars, Take Spotlight at Detroit Auto Show: Analysis
Alan Mulally, President and CEO (left), and Bill Ford, Executive ChairmanFord Motor Company, during the 2010 North American International Auto Showin Detroit, Michigan. (Photograph by Stan Honda/AFP/Getty Images) DETROIT—During General Motors' bankruptcy proceedings last year, skeptics of the plan worried that the automaker would be forced by the White House to produce many more smaller, fuel-efficient vehicles than the public wants while gas prices remain below $3.50. Looking around at GM's offerings at the North American International Auto Show this week it is apparent that, so far, this concern is unmerited: The biggest Cadillac ever, the XTS concept car, is showing;...

2010 Lancia (Chrysler) Delta Pic: 2010 Detroit Auto Show
Neither Fiat, nor Chrysler had a press conference today, but they did display two Fiat 500s, the current Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler lineup and this...a Lancia Delta with a Chrysler grill. We're not sure the rebadge job works too well here or if Fiat actually plans to bring this Lancia over as a Chrysler or this was simply to test public reaction.
