Quick Drive: 2013 Mazda CX-5 Prototype
REYKJAVIK, ICELAND -- "Skyactiv" finally makes sense. This October, an updated, 40-mpg (highway) Mazda3 with the brand's new gas direct-injection, 2.0-liter four, and six-speed manual or automatic gets the Skyactiv badge thanks to all those goodies. Afterwards, only Mazda's all-new models will wear the badge, which will be used in a manner similar to Mercedes-Benz's Bluetec and Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive. It's a green-branding ploy.

Unlike either of those two automakers, Mazda is too small to get into hybrids or any type of advanced electric/battery powertrains. The strategy is to concentrate on what most experts say will continue to be the mainstream technology: highly evolved internal...

First Test: 2012 Nissan Versa SL
The Nissan Versa has always been marketed as one of the cheapest new cars in America -- a budget-conscious consumer's delight. The all-new 2012 Nissan Versa is no exception. Nissan's ads proclaim it as having "the most space per dollar of any car in America," comparing its rear legroom to that of a Mercedes E-Class. In an increasingly competitive segment, is that really enough?

The top-of-the-line 2012 Nissan Versa SL we tested starts at $16,320. For that scratch you get a pretty well-equipped car, with front foglights, alloy wheels, 60/40 rear seats, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, cruise control, power windows and locks, and Nissan's CVT. Step down to the SV at $15,320 and you lose the alloys,...

Long Term Update 6: 2011 Mazda2
The green jellybean continues to turn heads. In Glendale, it got slammed as "an ugly green Japanese Beetle" by two women who'd just finished kickboxing class (I was walking behind them, and had a still-warm chocolate chip cookie in my hand, so I didn't jump to the car's defense). Later that day a twentysomething guy riding a bike in Burbank shouted, "Great car!" "Are you serious?" I asked, figuring he was being sarcastic. "No, it looks cool - I love it!" he said. And a woman in a Target parking lot came up to me and asked if a car seat would fit in the back seat.

The Mazda's boxy cuteness still makes me smile, but a couple of things are starting to get on my nerves. It seems like every car...

Long Term Update 5: 2011 Mazda2
Overall, I'm still liking the peppy Mazda2, but on a couple of occasions last month, the little green machine fell short. The first time was when planning a trip to Needles, California, a four-hour-plus drive from Los Angeles. There was no way that a female friend, and a guy friend, and I could cram ourselves and enough luggage for a beach weekend into the '2, and when it comes to ride quality, it far from resembles sitting atop a cloud of marshmallow fluff. Plus we didn't quite know how to get where we were going (it has no nav), and on the way back my husband wanted to listen to his beloved Detroit Tigers, and the '2 doesn't have XM satellite radio. Hello, Honda Odyssey.

The second time was...

First Drive: 2011 Volvo C70 T5
Famed philosopher Ferris Bueller once said, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you might miss it." And what better way to stop and smell the roses than in a convertible? Volvo's C70 makes it very easy to drop the top -- push a button, wait 30-40 seconds, and bathe in the sunshine. It's a lot easier than with traditional soft tops: no levers, no latches, no hooks. Heck, you don't even have to stretch your arms if you don't want to. It's leisure at its best.

This is not a sports car. It's a comfortable, relaxed cruiser, one of many power retractable hardtops that came out in the mid- to late-2000s. Volkswagen has the Eos, BMW has the 3 Series and Z4,...

Long Term Update 4: 2011 Mazda2 Touring
Hi, I'm Emiliana, the contented caretaker of MT's long-term Mazda2 Touring. Or, as my sister and I call it, the Green Goblin, the Jolly Green Rancher, Kermit, the Appletini, or the Mighty Green Machine. It's small and cute with a smiley-faced grille, and it's painted bright, pearly Spirited Green, which the women on staff love and the men definitely don't.

The Mazda2 shares a platform with the Ford Fiesta, and when it rolled into the MT garage everyone was curious how it would compare to its Detroit sibling. Turns out it's about 5 inches shorter and 220 pounds lighter, and just a little bit faster. Those of us who drove both of them at Car of the Year thought the '2 had a slight handling edge...

First Drive: 2012 Toyota Prius V
In Bob Lutz's cigar-smoke-scented new book, "Car Guys vs. Bean Counters," the father of the Chevy Volt declares that the Toyota Prius is a marketing stunt that bled Toyota to the tune of $300 million. However, Lutz continues, that money was very well-spent, as the Prius paid massive dividends in terms of good will from ill-informed consumers ("My Sequoia must get great mileage -- it's a Toyota!") and positive coverage from the elite, liberally biased press. ("Toyota builds the planet saving Prius; General Motors ushers in Armageddon with Hummer H2.") What Maximum Bob fails to mention is that Toyota has sold more than 2 million Prii, more than 1 million alone in the United States (with one third...

First Test: 2011 Toyota RAV4 Limited V-6
It's a typical sunny Friday afternoon in L.A. -- time to hit the road after another week performing my role in the office zombie routine. Let's see what's in the garage. The Pacific Blue Metallic 2011 Toyota RAV4 should fit the bill. Hmm, when was the last time Toyota updated the RAV4 (not counting the EV co-op with Tesla)? It looks comfortable. I bet my mom would dig it. It's the top-of-the-line Limited trim with the 3.5-liter V-6 and all-wheel drive. Those don't sound like volume-seller specs to me.

Anyway, let's get rolling. Crikey, how do I adjust the side mirrors on this thing? (*A minute or two later*) Ah, the side mirror toggle is down on the center console between the auxiliary audio...

First Look: 2012 Hyundai Accent
A long-neglected segment in the U.S. market, the subcompact scene has suddenly gotten very interesting. First came Honda's second-generation Fit, which set the bar for the other contenders. Then, Ford's Euro-cutie 2011 Fiesta made its stateside debut, followed shortly thereafter by its distant cousin, the Mazda2. All along, Hyundai's Accent soldiered on as competent, if somewhat unremarkable, contender in the segment. Its competitiveness in the U.S. market was also hampered by the lack of a five-door configuration.

Now that Hyundai has finally gained respectability with consumers and critics with such models as the Genesis, Equus, Sonata, and new Elantra, the automaker is looking to dominate...

Long Term Update 3: 2011 Mazda2 Touring
For those who think the Mazda2 is merely a rebadged Ford Fiesta, think again. Associate editor Scott Evans "was skeptical when people remarked there was a noticeable difference in handling between the Mazda2 and the Ford Fiesta, but then I realized that they were right. This little car is ridiculously fun to throw around."

Evans and senior editor Jonny Lieberman would love to see a Mazdaspeed2 -- with more torque. Executive editor Ed Loh adds that the 2 "might have the best shifter for an under $20,000 sticker. The shifter is weighted perfectly and canted so that it falls right under hand. The throw is short and crisp, which is nice because you're rowing often. The 2's engine could be described...
