First Drive: 2012 Scion iQ
Inching along in shoulder-to-shoulder rush hour traffic in a roaring city with pedestrians swarming crosswalks -- all while desperately searching for a parking space -- is nobody's idea of a good time. Scion has a proposition for urban dwellers in the form of its new 2012 Scion iQ city car.

The Toyota iQ (the car the Scion is based upon) is not a new car. The Scion version is -- technically. Designed to blend into densely populated cityscapes, the iQ does everything small, but in a big way. Dimensionally, it's slightly bigger than a Smart Fortwo, but it's still a runt when placed next to a Camry. While its size is the iQ's most eye-catching asset, it presents inherent packaging dilemmas. It's...

First Drive: 2012 Lotus Evora IPS Automatic
Call it what you will: blasphemy, a sign of the times, a smart business move. For Lotus, it's simply reality. In markets like North America and Asia, the brand is turning away a large number of customers who say they'd be happy to buy an Evora, if only it had an automatic transmission. That's about to change.

Arriving in late 2011 as a 2012 model, the self-shifting Lotus Evora IPS will be the first Lotus since the wholly forgettable Excel SA of the late '80s to offer an automatic transmission, and the first American-spec Lotus to offer an auto since the Eclat in the late '70s. It's the first step of a plan to rebuild the Lotus brand and increase its appeal to a broader range of consumers.

 The...

First Drive: Ken Okuyama's KO7 Roadster
Designer extraordinaire Ken Okuyama's love for cars is matched by his love for wristwatches, especially those from TAG Heuer. He prizes these precision timepieces so much that he has achieved an industry first: He has created a sports car inspired by one of those watches, a Grand Carrera. His KO7 roadster might employ a Lotus Elise R platform and powertrain, but that's where the similarity ends. In an exclusive test drive, we traveled 230 miles north of Tokyo to his hometown of Yamagata to be the first behind the wheel of the rare coupe.

But before Okuyama let us near his four-wheeled masterpiece, we found ourselves on a guided tour of one of the most amazing, multi-faceted design studios....

First Test: 2010 Lotus Evora
As the first all-new Lotus since the Exige made its debut in the United States back in 2006, the Evora, the world's only four-seat mid-engine sports car, enters the marketplace saddled with a dual mission: Attract new, more grown-up buyers to the brand, but, equally important, don't offend the current crop of customers whose youthfulness and hardcore devotion to a range of single-minded two-seaters has helped bring the boutique Brit back from the brink. While not a savior, per se, the Evora is a stepping stone for Lotus, designed to take the Norfolk, U.K.-based outfit to the next level. How? With a mature-audience hit intended to double U.S. sales while putting Porsche on alert. Has the maker...

First Drive: 2011 Jaguar XJ L Supercharged
With the modern automobile's mass generally increasing year by year, it is often said that the mark of a good vehicle is its ability to shrink around the driver -- to drive like a smaller, lighter car than its lengthy list of standard equipment and safety features would suggest. Here, on the impossibly tight and windy sections of Malibu, California's famed Mulholland Drive, the 2011 Jaguar XJ L Supercharged -- Jaguar's newest flagship luxury sedan -- does exactly that.

More than 4000 pounds and 206 inches of luxury sedan isn't exactly in its element hustling the fine, treacherously narrow line between jagged, rocky canyon walls and perilously steep drop-offs, but the Jaguar is sure-footed and...
