First Drive: 2011 Cadillac Escalade ESV Platinum AWD
"Stop living in the past," say countless advice purveyors across a broad spectrum of media. It's good advice if you're trying to get over an ex-girlfriend, but you pretty much have to live in the past to drop almost $90,000 on a body-on-frame luxury SUV like the 2011 Cadillac Escalade ESV Platinum. That's $88,295 to be precise, making this the second-most-expensive Caddy available. (First place by a slight margin goes to the Escalade Hybrid.)

The original GMT400 Escalade was a hastily created rebadge of the GMC Yukon, designed as an answer to the then-popular Lincoln Navigator. But it was the next-generation model, based on the GMT800 platform, that became the bling king, while the Lincoln...

First Drive: 2011 Ford Flex Titanium
A couple of months back, MT's Detroit editor, Todd Lassa, said in an item introducing the Ford Flex Titanium that you could option it into the 50K range -- right smack in the Lincoln MKT's wheelhouse.

The MKT, in case you aren't up on MK nomenclature (and really, who is), is Lincoln's version of the Flex, and it's supposedly more luxurious and otherwise gloriously differentiated from its Ford sibling. But tack on the Flex Titanium package with the EcoBoost engine option, and suddenly, there's not so much differentiation going on here short of the sheetmetal.

For a vehicle that starts right around 30 grand, the Flex is generally meant for the people-moving masses, a hipper (depending on what...

First Drive: 2011 Ford F-150
It wasn't all that long ago that the all-new 2009 Ford F-150 took our Motor Trend Truck of the Year honors. When it won, the Ford received praise for its best-in-class towing capacity, rigid frame, and broad spectrum of models -- everything from the basic work truck to the upscale Platinum -- with three cabs to choose from. The engines were fine, but not spectacular. So it may seem surprising that just two model years later, the 2011 Ford F-150 lineup has undergone a significant update, with several key improvements to an already stout truck.

There are even more trim levels in the F-150 range than when it won Truck of the Year. It starts with the base XL, then moves up to STX, XLT, FX2 and...

When it won, the Ford received praise for its best-in-class towing capacity, rigid frame, and broad spectrum of models -- everything from the basic work truck to the upscale Platinum -- with three cabs to choose from. The engines were fine, but not exactly spectacular. So it may seem surprising that just two model years later, the 2011 Ford F-150 lineup has undergone a significant update, with several key improvements to an already stout truck.

There are still several trim levels in the F-150 range, even more than when it won Truck of the Year. It starts with the base XL, then moves up...

First Test: 2011 Lincoln MKX
For most manufacturers, a midlife update consists of a slight styling change or a new trim level, but like its Edge sibling, Lincoln's second-generation MKX got a major makeover for 2011.

The most significant change to the 2011 Lincoln MKX is the addition of Ford's 3.7-liter Duratec V-6 engine and new manually shiftable six-speed automatic transmission. Engine output is rated at 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. Even with the bump in power, the MKX still gets a claimed class-leading 26 mpg highway.

Performance, naturally, is improved. An extra 40 horsepower and 30 pound-feet of torque are nothing to scoff at, and the MKX makes good use of them. The Lincoln ute's 0-to-60 time has...

First Drive: 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid
As has happened with quite a few Ford products recently, within several hundred feet of driving away in the 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid I blanched slightly. Once again, this definitely was not what I was expecting. Back there -- glancing in the mirror to where I slipped the shifter into Drive a few moments ago -- I thought this was going to be a very predictable, write-by-numbers kinda story. Re-wrapped Fusion Hybrid, Lincoln-esque styling, a couple of upgraded features. Slam dunk. Simple.

Not so simple. Unlike Cadillac, which has taken the laudable (and more expensive) approach of creating models that are often noticeably differentiated from their GM brethren, Lincoln appears to have no reservations...

Verdict: 2009 Mazda6s GT
It was seven years ago when we had our last long-term Mazda6, a new-for-2003 model that replaced Mazda's then-aging sedan lineup of 626 and Millennia. With a choice between a 2.3-liter, 160-horse four-cylinder (6 i) and a 3.0-liter, 220-horse V-6 (6 s), we opted for the 6 s paired with a sporty five-speed manual. While no exceptional powerhouse, the 3.0-liter was nonetheless refined and offered more than adequate oomph (0-to-60 in 7.0 seconds). Plus, the manual transmission, a rarity in a V-6 family sedan, was especially entertaining and rewarding. Overall, the 6's tidier-than-Accord size, miserly EPA fuel economy (20/27 by 2003 standards, 17/25 by today's), and impressive reliability and maintenance...

First Drive: 2011 Infiniti QX56
It looks much better on the street than in photographs. For 2011, the new, controversially styled Infiniti QX56 replaces the U.S.-built, Nissan Titan/Armada-based sport/utility flagship with one based on the Nissan Patrol and built in Japan. Despite maintaining the old model's engine displacement, the '11 QX's 5.6-liter V-8 is all new, shared with the M56 and therefore more efficient and more powerful. The new platform, though, is old school -- body-on-frame.

Infiniti believes the full-size luxury SUV market has stabilized and will maintain about 105,000 units through the first half of the decade (it peaked at 291k in 2006).

The market leader remains the Cadillac Escalade, though Infiniti...

2011 Lincoln MKX Pic: 2010 Detroit Auto Show
The glam is back in Lincoln's press intros, and this singer belted out a torch song worthy of a Vegas lounge act. The refreshed LINCOLN MKX boasts a new exterior treatment, but the real news in the interior and dash. Driven by an infotainment system called MyLincoln Touch. it uses two color LCDs and a color touchscreen in the dash to replace virtually every button nad knob on the instrument panel. Configurable displays are controlled by buttons on the steering wheel, reducing driver distraction.
