Quick Drive: 2013 Mazda CX-5 Prototype
REYKJAVIK, ICELAND -- "Skyactiv" finally makes sense. This October, an updated, 40-mpg (highway) Mazda3 with the brand's new gas direct-injection, 2.0-liter four, and six-speed manual or automatic gets the Skyactiv badge thanks to all those goodies. Afterwards, only Mazda's all-new models will wear the badge, which will be used in a manner similar to Mercedes-Benz's Bluetec and Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive. It's a green-branding ploy.

Unlike either of those two automakers, Mazda is too small to get into hybrids or any type of advanced electric/battery powertrains. The strategy is to concentrate on what most experts say will continue to be the mainstream technology: highly evolved internal...

First Drive: 2012 Kia Rio
During the driving portion of the 2012 Kia Rio press presentation in South Korea, we visited a phallic-themed, public rest area located off National Route 44. Thankfully there weren't any live ones, but you couldn't escape the wooden and stone phalluses and trinkets standing at attention in the parking lot and gift shop. After distancing ourselves from the giggling European vacationers, we asked about the location's significance.

Our Kia hosts didn't have a backstory for us, and not wanting a nastygram from our IT folks, we didn't attempt to Google from Korea. But we do have answers about the new 2012 Rio, which, like a particular rest stop now seared into memory, is designed to stand out...

Comparison: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 vs. 2011 BMW X5 M vs. 2011 Porsche Cayenne Turbo
These days, defining a sport/utility vehicle is hard. Just about anything top-heavy that necessitates the slight lifting of a passenger's leg for entry usually qualifies, thanks in part to the introduction of car-based crossovers. There are still a handful of vehicles that combine sport and utility to the fullest extent imaginable, clearing up any confusion when these three letters come to mind. We've rounded up three of these -- the 555-horsepower BMW X5 M, 500-horsepower Porsche Cayenne Turbo, and 465-horsepower Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. We'll call them Super SUVs -- SuperUVs for brevity -- due to their massive amounts of power, high top speed, surefooted stick, and excellent utility.

First Test: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8
The traditional performance plan for Jeeps was to unbolt, unzip, unsnap, and otherwise dismount every component that wasn't necessary, then mount the biggest knobby tires possible and head for the hills. The SRT guys have gone the opposite direction by throwing technology and fat, sticky Italian tires at a Jeep to create a whole different monster. While the Grand Cherokee SRT8 may not have the precision of its Hemi-fied siblings, it might be even more fun. Throwing this 5200-pound SUV around corners gives you the same guilty pleasure as finishing a meal that earns you a T-shirt.

The big Jeep likes to be manhandled and tossed around. It will respond to smooth inputs, but it will return equal...

First Drive: 2012 Porsche Panamera Diesel
While America's base Panamera model continues to be the 300-horsepower V-6, European buyers now have a choice in the form of the 2012 Porsche Panamera diesel. Powered by a 250-hp diesel V-6 mated to an eight-speed automatic, it costs exactly the same as the gas V-6 and seven-speed twin-clutch PDK. Yet in official Euro tests, it uses only two-thirds the fuel with roughly the same performance.

No surprise then that Porsche expects the diesel to dominate sub-V-8 Panamera sales in Europe. The V-6 gas engine and even the vastly more expensive but barely more economical hybrid will likely lag far behind in the model mix.

So Porsche believes the diesel will be a big seller, but the engines's power...

Arrival: 2011 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid
We've started a new evaluation process for our long-term vehicles here at Motor Trend, whereby individual editors will effectively "own" the vehicles for all or most of the time we have them in the fleet. The idea is to improve the quality of our long-term reports, to get beyond what can often boil down to a series of impressions, and get to the nitty-gritty of what it's actually like to live with the vehicle under test.

"Owning" our new Porsche Cayenne long-termer might not seem like taking one for the team, but bear with me. I could have ordered the Turbo. After all, a 500-horsepower SUV that'll nail 0-60 in the low 4s and has a claimed top speed of 172 mph sounds wickedly entertaining. But,...

First Drive: 2012 Volkswagen Beetle
Want to know the secret to angering the Volkswagen PR guys? Ask them if the brand-new 2012 Beetle "isn't just a GTI in a Halloween costume." They'd sock you one if they could, but luckily, they can't. But they would do well to remember that a large part of Volkswagen history consists of dressing up an existing chassis in a new outfit. After all, what was the VW Type 3 if not a Type 1 with 200 extra CCs, a rubberized subframe, and some new metal? Then you've got the Type 14 Karmann Ghia and -- dare I say it -- the Porsche 356. Point is, there's no great shame in dressing up an existing chassis, especially when Wolfsburg does it. There would only be shame if the newly garbed car weren't any good.

Like,...

Long Term Update 5: 2011 Mazda2
Overall, I'm still liking the peppy Mazda2, but on a couple of occasions last month, the little green machine fell short. The first time was when planning a trip to Needles, California, a four-hour-plus drive from Los Angeles. There was no way that a female friend, and a guy friend, and I could cram ourselves and enough luggage for a beach weekend into the '2, and when it comes to ride quality, it far from resembles sitting atop a cloud of marshmallow fluff. Plus we didn't quite know how to get where we were going (it has no nav), and on the way back my husband wanted to listen to his beloved Detroit Tigers, and the '2 doesn't have XM satellite radio. Hello, Honda Odyssey.

The second time was...

First Test: 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Your dad warned you about this Porsche. Don't let its red lipstick and wide hips persuade you, he said, because the only thing that follows that car is trouble. Speeding tickets, too. But you can't help yourself. That roof-high wing perched on aluminum struts, those foot-wide rear tires, and those red wheels (red wheels!) keep piquing your interest.

You're not alone. We couldn't help ourselves when the gray car pictured arrived for testing, as we ogled the red detailing (yes, even the seat belts) and that 3.8-liter flat-six hanging over the rear axle. This is, in essence, the fast version of the GT3. Thanks to a bump in compression, its engine makes 450 horsepower at 7900 rpm; redline arrives...

First Look: 2012 Porsche 911
Illustration: Scott Olsen...      read full caption Illustration: Scott OlsenOkay, everyone, get it out of your systems. "Oh, look! A new 911 that looks just like the old 911!" We know that sentiment is going to fill the comments section below this article. For fans of the 911, we celebrate the fact that every new 911 still looks like a 911. The first car was a near-perfect design for its time, and all Porsche has had to do over almost 50 years of production is modernize it with each new generation. What really matters is what's under the skin, and the 2012 991 has plenty going on.
