Long Term Update 2: 2011 Nissan Juke SV
"Fuel" and "economy" don't really mix when it comes to the Juke. Under numerous circumstances, with an equally diverse group of drivers behind its 370Z-esque wheel, the Juke's 1.6-liter "enjoys having a torrid love affair with fuel," as associate online editor, Benson Kong, best put it.

How passionate is said affair? Very. On one occasion, a staffer drove 176 miles on a single tank of its required premium brew. Granted, range, like average fuel economy, depends largely on driver inputs. But still, 176 miles? Some motorcycles can do that on one gallon. Bottom line, it takes a lot of work, plus a 15 mph tailwind, to attain the EPA-rated 25 city/30 highway mpg ratings. But it can be done.

Case-in-point:...

First Drive: 2012 Toyota Yaris U.S. Spec
When the Yaris took over for the Echo as Toyota's smallest car in the U.S. in the middle of the last decade, the subcompact realm was barely inhabited. Gas prices were low, SUVs ruled the roads, and GM and Chrysler seemed healthy enough. Back then, the B-segment was just a gleam in most automakers' eyes.

But despite Toyota's long presence in the segment, the Yaris hasn't gotten much love. According to reports, the No. 1 Japanese automaker didn't have the budget for a comprehensive redesign, so the 2012 Toyota Yaris -- the company's third-best-selling vehicle in the world behind Corolla and Camry -- would have to settle for a refresh.

Gone is the bulbous, tadpole-like face that never failed...

First Test: 2011 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro
Ever since 1995, when the Audi A4 first bowed in the U.S., it has been known as the car with the nice interior. That holds true today, but impressive confines alone don't win sales battles. Last year, Audi sold 34,672 A4s in the States, placing the car somewhere in the middle of the tough premium compact car market. That number was enough to top the Lexus IS and Acura TSX, but the A4 lags behind the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (58,785) and the BMW 3 Series (100,910).

According to those numbers, Audi's German rivals have a better grasp on what makes the segment tick. But with each new generation of the A4, the folks at Ingolstadt are slowly but surely giving those automakers a reason to look in...

First Test: 2012 Nissan Versa SL
The Nissan Versa has always been marketed as one of the cheapest new cars in America -- a budget-conscious consumer's delight. The all-new 2012 Nissan Versa is no exception. Nissan's ads proclaim it as having "the most space per dollar of any car in America," comparing its rear legroom to that of a Mercedes E-Class. In an increasingly competitive segment, is that really enough?

The top-of-the-line 2012 Nissan Versa SL we tested starts at $16,320. For that scratch you get a pretty well-equipped car, with front foglights, alloy wheels, 60/40 rear seats, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, cruise control, power windows and locks, and Nissan's CVT. Step down to the SV at $15,320 and you lose the alloys,...

First Drive: 2013 Lexus GS Prototype
Lexus has a problem. Toyota's luxury brand is -- whisper it -- not cool. The bland smoothness and silence of the current LS and ES models are increasingly appealing to a generation whose idea of a great drive is the back nine at the country club with their retired buddies. The rumbling IS F might be an intriguing AMG-meets-Ginza sport sedan, but the rest of the IS range remains resolutely regarded as a chick car. The lux-by-numbers RX, which has become the brand's leitmotif in the U.S., is now the favored ride of modestly prosperous suburban women of a certain age. (How Toyota squandered the opportunity to define the Lexus brand with the original LS, a car so stunningly well-engineered it sent...

First Drive: 2012 Scion iQ
Inching along in shoulder-to-shoulder rush hour traffic in a roaring city with pedestrians swarming crosswalks -- all while desperately searching for a parking space -- is nobody's idea of a good time. Scion has a proposition for urban dwellers in the form of its new 2012 Scion iQ city car.

The Toyota iQ (the car the Scion is based upon) is not a new car. The Scion version is -- technically. Designed to blend into densely populated cityscapes, the iQ does everything small, but in a big way. Dimensionally, it's slightly bigger than a Smart Fortwo, but it's still a runt when placed next to a Camry. While its size is the iQ's most eye-catching asset, it presents inherent packaging dilemmas. It's...

First Drive: 2012 Nissan Versa Sedan
At 6 feet, 6 inches tall, my half-Norwegian, half-Swedish co-pilot is no small gentleman. At 175.4 inches long, 66.7 inches wide, and 59.6 inches tall, the 2012 Nissan Versa is a relatively small five-passenger sedan. Yet surprisingly, the two work well together. He fits inside the popular B-segment car and his neck isn't kinked at nearly 90 degrees. We're both quite comfortable in the new Nissan.

Comfort was one of four main areas Nissan engineers fast-tracked for improvement on the new Versa. Efficiency, style, and value were the other three as the Versa's engineers built an all-new car from the ground up.

Producing a spacious cabin and significantly smoother ride that felt more like a...

First Drive: 2012 Mitsubishi i
Many years ago I visited my wealthy cousin Sheldon in Montreal. He'd just purchased an $18 million jet. Hey, I said he was wealthy. Being a good socialist college student, I said something to the effect of, "Shelly, you bourgeoisie pig, why in the hell would you spend $18 million on a jet?!?" He smiled and said, "Jonny, remember when you were a kid and you learned to ride a bike and suddenly your world was this big?" He set his hands about six inches apart. "Then you got your drivers license and suddenly your world became this big?" he said as his hands went shoulder-width apart. "Well, I can fly from New York to Honolulu on one tank of gas." Sheldon spread his arms out all the way. "My world...

First Test: 2011 Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Your dad warned you about this Porsche. Don't let its red lipstick and wide hips persuade you, he said, because the only thing that follows that car is trouble. Speeding tickets, too. But you can't help yourself. That roof-high wing perched on aluminum struts, those foot-wide rear tires, and those red wheels (red wheels!) keep piquing your interest.

You're not alone. We couldn't help ourselves when the gray car pictured arrived for testing, as we ogled the red detailing (yes, even the seat belts) and that 3.8-liter flat-six hanging over the rear axle. This is, in essence, the fast version of the GT3. Thanks to a bump in compression, its engine makes 450 horsepower at 7900 rpm; redline arrives...

Long Term Update 1: 2011 Nissan Juke
A trip south to downtown San Diego from our Los Angeles headquarters is just over 120 miles. Or in Nissan Juke terms (with yours truly behind the wheel), that's around three-quarters of a tank down the notoriously traffic-clogged Interstate 5 highway.

Only if I kill the air conditioning, set the amusing I-Con system to "Eco", and play coy with the throttle, will the thirsty little 1.6-liter drink maybe half its 11.8-gallon premium fuel capacity on the way to America's Finest City. And that's being generous with an absolutely desolate path ahead and cruise control pegged at 72 mph. A Santa Ana tailwind always helps out, too.

Keeping the Juke's instant mpg gauge above 20 mpg is as tricky as...
