First Drive: 2012 Kia Rio
During the driving portion of the 2012 Kia Rio press presentation in South Korea, we visited a phallic-themed, public rest area located off National Route 44. Thankfully there weren't any live ones, but you couldn't escape the wooden and stone phalluses and trinkets standing at attention in the parking lot and gift shop. After distancing ourselves from the giggling European vacationers, we asked about the location's significance.

Our Kia hosts didn't have a backstory for us, and not wanting a nastygram from our IT folks, we didn't attempt to Google from Korea. But we do have answers about the new 2012 Rio, which, like a particular rest stop now seared into memory, is designed to stand out...

Long Term Update 1: 2011 Kia Optima SX
When we first tested the new Kia Optima SX at our 2011 COTY competition last year we were a little surprised with the results, as were Kia. See, our tester was almost a full second slower than its sibling the Hyundai Sonata Turbo (6.5 seconds compared to 7.4 seconds to 60 mph) and in testing terms, that's a life time. We were all left scratching our heads as to why basically the same cars were so different in their performance.

Flash forward to March when we took delivery of our new Kia Optima SX long term vehicle. Taking a nice long road trip shortly after arrival meant our Optima was fully broken in before we ran our standard battery of tests all vehicles get when becoming part of our long...

Arrival: 2011 Kia Optima SX
If Kia's all-new Optima is any indication of where the company is headed, everyone else had better take note. I got my first in-person look at the all-new 2011 Kia Optima SX at our 2010 Car of the Year program.

"Is that really the Kia? I thought it was one of the Germans," I said to associate road test editor Carlos Lago. Just a few years ago no one in their right mind could possibly confuse anything produced by the Korean manufacturer with something from Germany. Which is why we had to get an Optima in for an extended stay to see if it works as well as it looks.

We added two options to our top-spec Optima SX, which started at $26,690. The $2150 SX Premium package adds a panoramic sunroof,...

First Test: 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid
The big fallacy regarding Korean cars goes something like this: Korean vehicles are cheaply priced and built. Kia is a Korean automaker. Therefore, all Kias are attractively priced but questionably constructed. As the company's first dedicated ecocar, the 2011 Optima Hybrid is yet another stab at debunking that fallacy.

Starting from $27,250 (including a $750 destination and handling fee), the Optima Hybrid is one of the most expensive Kias you can get today. Comfortably equipped from the get-go, our tester arrived with the optional $5000 Hybrid Premium Technology Package, bringing the cost to $32,250 and adding features like a panoramic sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, HID headlights, and an...

First Drive: 2012 Volkswagen Passat VR6
Once upon a time, foreign midsize cars -- compacts by modern standards -- came with four-cylinder engines only. Then they got V-6s, with Honda reluctantly complying last among the major competitors with its Accord in 1995. The tide turned last year, first with the Hyundai Sonata, then its platform sibling the Kia Optima, which each launched only with four-cylinder naturally aspirated and turbo engines. Chevrolet's 2013 Malibu will come with four-cylinder engines only, when it goes on sale early next year. It wouldn't be surprising to see the next Ford Fusion follow suit with naturally aspirated and EcoBoost four engine options. The 2.0-liter TSI four far outsells the V-6 version of the premium...

First Test: 2011 Kia Forte SX five-door
The Angelenos we encountered couldn't get enough of Kia's newest hatchback, the Forte SX. Dog walkers and people dining streetside peered and pointed at this people-mover. For a few seconds, their foreheads wrinkled and their eyes widened in wonder, trying to put a badge to the form.

Only a few hatchbacks today priced under $25,000 can compete with the Forte five-door's well-proportioned physique. Its nose, garnished with a trademark Kia family grille and large badge, carries over from the sharp-looking sedan, as do the chiseled front shoulders. The all-new rump had many staffers thinking it hailed from Ingolstadt, which isn't surprising given the sculptor, Peter Schreyer, who penned numerous...

First Test: 2011 Kia Sportage SX
Kia's on a roll. A fleet of new vehicles clothed in the latest Peter Schreyer fashion now leaves no visible evidence of platform sharing with sister brand Hyundai. Savvy packaging, class-competitive drivetrains, and soaring quality and reliability ratings have helped boost the brand's market share by 48 percent since 2008. Even more impressively, Kia's once pitiful bargain-basement residual values have climbed 38 percent on average, making leasing an attractive option. Now, at long bloody last, the company is getting serious about providing some sporting cred to back up its sporting looks.

Henceforth when you see the letters SX emblazoned on the rump of a Kia, you can expect to find performance...

First Test: 2011 Kia Forte EX
Regardless of the car in question, we auto reviewers can typically find at least one aspect of a vehicle we all agree on, but beyond that it's a crapshoot. In the case of the 2011 Kia Forte, we found three: It's a great value, it's surprisingly fun to drive, and it's utterly forgettable.

What happened? A year and a half ago, we were pretty impressed with the Forte. Back then, it was the opening salvo of Kia's design revolution and a blinding improvement over the really forgettable Kia Something-or-other it replaced. Less than two years on, though, the competition has come on strong and the Forte is faltering.

In fact, Kia itself has left its own car in the dust. Just looking at our long-term...

First Test: 2011 Toyota RAV4 Limited V-6
It's a typical sunny Friday afternoon in L.A. -- time to hit the road after another week performing my role in the office zombie routine. Let's see what's in the garage. The Pacific Blue Metallic 2011 Toyota RAV4 should fit the bill. Hmm, when was the last time Toyota updated the RAV4 (not counting the EV co-op with Tesla)? It looks comfortable. I bet my mom would dig it. It's the top-of-the-line Limited trim with the 3.5-liter V-6 and all-wheel drive. Those don't sound like volume-seller specs to me.

Anyway, let's get rolling. Crikey, how do I adjust the side mirrors on this thing? (*A minute or two later*) Ah, the side mirror toggle is down on the center console between the auxiliary audio...

First Look: 2012 Kia Rio
We got a glimpse of Kia's new Rio in hatchback form at the recent Geneva auto show, and the beat goes on this week in New York with the arrival of the U.S. market 2012 Kia Rio sedan and Rio5 hatch. The Rio was the lone Kia product that had not received a full makeover from head stylist Peter Schreyer, whose recent eye-catching designs include the new Optima and Sportage small SUV.

Whereas the all-new 2012 Hyundai Accent, Korea's other subcompact on display at New York, features Hyundai's new "fluidic sculpture" corporate design language, the Rio has a more minimalist, sporty European flavor, no doubt a nod to Schreyer's former Audi experience. From the rear, the Rio five-door shows a strong...
