Long Term Update 6: 2010 Hyundai Tucson
At the Hyundai Tucson's price range, value is the factor that is most critical to a crossover's success. There are so many crossovers with a price tag of $25,000-$30,000 that what differentiates one from the rest of the pack is the features. And the Hyundai Tucson has tons of 'em.

Our topline Limited AWD comes with enough goodies that one staffer, having not driven the Tucson for a while, logged, "When it comes to the cabin, this Tucson has everything! Heated seats, Bluetooth audio, power everything, satellite radio, nav system, rearview camera, huge sunroof. I kept finding myself thinking, 'Oh, yeah-it has that, too.'" The steering-wheel-mounted controls also received kudos; they're well-placed...

Long Term Update 5: 2010 Hyundai Tucson
Associate Online Editor Scott Evans also spent time on the road in the Tucson, and has mixed feelings about the Hyundai.

"It looks good, it's got a decent amount of space, and it gets good gas mileage. Power is better than I remember it being as well. On the other hand, the steering is subpar, probably my least favorite of any Hyundai, with its videogame feedback. The ride is a bit unforgiving for a road-biased people-mover, and I cannot describe my irritation with the front seats. I understand the necessity of anti-whiplash headrests, but these go to the extreme. I'm unable set the seatback where I prefer it because the headrests are poking my head and forcing me to look down. As a result,...

Long Term Update 4: 2010 Hyundai Tucson Limited
Definitly a great value for the money, the Tucson is replete with features like Bluetooth audio controls, satellite radio, and navigation included at its affordable $29,590 as-tested price (not bad for the topline model with all the goodies). Around town, there's plenty of power available, but some staffers are of the opinion the engine lacks the oomph needed to easily pass cutthroat drivers on California freeways, and the engine note sounds increasingly coarse above 60 mph.

Seats are comfortable, and controls and features in the cabin are easy to use. Associate online editor Zach Gale logged that the Tucson's cousin, the Kia Sportage, has most of the same characteristics as the Hyundai, but...

Long Term Update 3: 2010 Hyundai Tucson
The Tucson continues to show its potential as a viable alternative to the ubiquitous Honda CR-V, what with its roomy interior, comfortable ride, and impressive fuel economy all wrapped in an attractive, affordable package. There have been some complaints about the Tucson's lack of power, but the crossover's 176 horses are comparable to that of the CR-V (180).

The Bluetooth controls work well, and many on staff agree with digital integration director Mike Floyd, who says, "One automaker doing a really nice job organizing its wheel controls these days is Hyundai, with our long-term Tucson's helm a case in point. This is a really nicely designed set of controls that have proven both simple and...

Long Term Update 2: 2010 Hyundai Tucson Limited
At 7500 miles, the Tucson went in for its maiden maintenance, a very reasonable $58.90 oil change, full inspection, and tire rotation.

Editor-at-large Ron Kiino took the Hyundai on a fishing trip to the mountains, and notes, "The Tucson's turning circle, at 34.7 feet, is noticeably tidier than the CR-V's (37.8) as well as the Outback's (36.8). This difference may not seem a big deal, but it comes in handy more often than not. It's nice knowing that even sharp U-turns are no problem. Over my 1000-mile road trip, the Hyundai returned 25.1 mpg -- right in line with its EPA numbers of 21 city/28 highway/24 combined. The Tucson's NavTraffic feature was handy when I left the bustle of Los Angeles...

First Test: 2011 Kia Sportage
Korean brands have long been relegated to an afterthoughts by the average automotive consumer -- for the most part, they’ve been the little fish in a sea filled with larger predators. But the currents have been changing for the better for the small fish over the past few years. Waves of new product bearing Korean emblems have steadily chipped away at aged perceptions and lifted street credibility, but if Kia had any keepsake from its modest past, it would be the Sportage moniker.

The small sport-utility vehicle was first offered for the 1995 model year and remains the longest-running nameplate in Kia’s United States history. It has tenure in the States, but the Sportage has never really...

Long Term Update 1: 2010 Hyundai Tucson Limited
"I sense seismic activity in Tucson," notes Executive editor Ed Loh. "As I pull into driveways or over speed bumps, there's a quiet creak emanating from somewhere in the interior."

Senior Editor Ron Kiino noticed this noise as well and believes he solved the mystery. "The annoying cabin creak, most prevalent when subjecting the Tucson to slight chassis twist, seems to be coming from the trim around and under the panoramic sunroof. I don't recall experiencing this squeaky gremlin in Tucsons with the standard metal roof. Overall, the Tucson's structure feels solid." Meanwhile, associate Web editor Kirill Ougarov isn't that pleased with the Hyundai's ignition system: "Why is there no keyless ignition...

Arrival: 2010 Hyundai Tucson Limited AWD
Some vehicles pass through our comparison tests with little more than a "Next!" from the judges. One exceptionally worthy vehicle wins. Often, though, our tests include a few standouts that generate serious buzz-admiring glances, praises in editors' notebooks, approving comments during our evening dinner discussions. Such was the case during last January's "Four of a Kind" comparo, in which Hyundai's revamped 2010 Hyundai Tucson crossover -- though it finished second -- emerged as one of the leading "buzz-getters" of the quartet.

Now we've got a 2010 Tucson Limited AWD in our long-term fleet. In top Limited trim, the Tucson overflows with standard goodies right off the showroom floor -- including...
