First Test: 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec
Twenty Benjamins. Two large. Two thousand dollars. Any way you put it, throwing that much cash on top of the Genesis 4.6's $44,500 base price gets you a Hyundai sedan unlike any other. The new 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec touts more power, promises stickier grip, and has the most inappropriate name in Hyundai's modern-day lineup.

Despite what its label may conjure in enthusiasts' minds, the R-Spec isn't a sedan designed to embarrass the curvy-road combatants from Mercedes AMG, Cadillac V, and BMW M. No, the Genesis 5.0 R-Spec is more a sport model than 'Ring racer. That's that.

But the R-Spec is a step in the right direction. It gives the standard Genesis much-needed injections of athleticism...

First Look: 2012 Hyundai Genesis Sedan
Hyundai's Genesis sedan is much improved for 2012, yet its position in the market won't change one bit. The Genesis will continue to give engineers and product planners at Mercedes-Benz and Lexus fits, thanks to the sedan's upgraded V-6 engine, revised suspension tuning, and a new eight-speed automatic transmission -- not to mention the 429-horsepower R-Spec model.

Debuting at the Chicago Auto Show, the 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan is prepared to battle competitors from above, like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and, more directly, the Chrysler 300C. Whether you choose the V-6 or one of the two V-8 models, the Genesis uses a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to the transmission,...

First Test: 2011 Hyundai Equus
Hyundai, the company that makes those cheap little runabouts, is building a big luxury sedan with dreams of slaying German and Japanese standard-bearers. This sounds familiar.

But it's not 2008 anymore, and we aren't talking about the Hyundai Genesis. No, we're talking about the new 2011 Hyundai Equus, an even bigger and more luxurious sedan aimed not at the everyday E-Classes and 5 Series, but at the mighty S-Class and Lexus LS.

You'll be forgiven for confusing the Genesis' and Equus' stories. After all, the playbook hasn't changed at all. Both are large luxury sedans with the same V-8 engine driving the same automatic transmission and rear wheels. They also share the strategy that has made...

First Test: 2011 Nissan Juke SV
Nissan's all-new 2011 Juke has the subtlety of an atom bomb. Even cast against the increasingly avant-garde crossover segment, the Juke looks downright alien. Its styling is said to evoke rally cars and motorcycles (the center console resembles a fuel tank), but from our staff the face elicited comparisons begrudgingly accepting (Isuzu Vehicross) and downright hateful (Pontiac Aztek).

While the design is the most polarizing aspect, we reached agreement on performance. The 2011 Nissan Juke's turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four produces an eager 188 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. With the continuously variable automatic buzzing the engine's top speed incessantly, the front-drive Juke...

Verdict: 2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6
There's no questioning the impact the 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedan had on the automotive world when it was introduced nearly two years ago. The Genesis launch drew a faultline that spanned the globe, with tremors and outright rumbles felt from Detroit to Germany to Japan. Rival engineers and execs are undoubtedly still standing in the nearest doorway.

Why? Because Hyundai, previously a South Korean underdog of an automaker known for its budget-slashing econoboxes, proved to the world it's capable of upping its game and competing in the rarified luxury-sedan market, and this at a time when many rivals were struggling just to keep their coffee machines percolating-unsuccessfully, in some cases.

 The...

Comparison: 2010 Ford Taurus Limited AWD vs 2011 Toyota Avalon Limited vs 2010 Hyundai Genesis 3.8
DISCLAIMER: DO NOT attempt to buy one of the three large sedans seen on these pages unless you are (A) ready to retire, (B) on this earth to serve as a highway chicane, (C) allowed to use blue-lined parking spots. Okay, we kid. But not about choice A, which is absolutely true. From August 2009 through July 2010, median-age buyers of the Toyota Avalon (64 years old), Ford Taurus (58), and Hyundai Genesis (58) were all on the verge of enjoying senior discounts. Truth be told, folks who purchase these full-size sedans do tend to be, um, mature, but not drastically more so than the average car buyer; in fact, 49 years is the median age of purchasers industrywide.

So why do older buyers flock...

Long Term Update 6: 2009 Hyundai Genesis 4.6
"The Genesis might have been designed and engineered in Korea," says editor-in-chief Angus MacKenzie, "but the 4.6-liter Tau V-8 feels eerily German in its power delivery. It's smooth and linear until about 3000 rpm, then you get a noticeable surge as the engine gets a second wind; old Benz V-8s used to feel just like this. At 3000 rpm in top gear, the Genesis is cruising at 110 mph -- and could do it all day long.

"Overall, the Genesis is a comfortable and composed cruiser, its laid-back demeanor marred only by the slight busyness of the stiffly sprung rearend. It's a minor niggle in a car that is otherwise astonishingly accomplished. Also, the standard Hyundai stoppers are marginal when hustling...

Cheap Speed Showdown: 6 Sport Car Comparison Test
A romp on an empty back road with the right car can deliver a double shot of high-performance fun. When the chemistry is just right, the driver melds into one harmonious bond with the hardware. Yet the cognitive man–machine mashup isn’t the exclusive domain of the six-figure sports car. There are plenty of inexpensive rides that deliver a hardcore mission—with little fluff.

We gathered six of the newest cheap speed machines and divided them into three groups based on driveline. In the rear-drive class, the Chevy Camaro V6 went tire-to-tire with the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T. Driving all four wheels, the Subaru Impreza WRX took on the Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart. In the front-drive class,...
