First Drive: 2012 Kia Rio
During the driving portion of the 2012 Kia Rio press presentation in South Korea, we visited a phallic-themed, public rest area located off National Route 44. Thankfully there weren't any live ones, but you couldn't escape the wooden and stone phalluses and trinkets standing at attention in the parking lot and gift shop. After distancing ourselves from the giggling European vacationers, we asked about the location's significance.

Our Kia hosts didn't have a backstory for us, and not wanting a nastygram from our IT folks, we didn't attempt to Google from Korea. But we do have answers about the new 2012 Rio, which, like a particular rest stop now seared into memory, is designed to stand out...

First Test: 2012 Nissan Versa SL
The Nissan Versa has always been marketed as one of the cheapest new cars in America -- a budget-conscious consumer's delight. The all-new 2012 Nissan Versa is no exception. Nissan's ads proclaim it as having "the most space per dollar of any car in America," comparing its rear legroom to that of a Mercedes E-Class. In an increasingly competitive segment, is that really enough?

The top-of-the-line 2012 Nissan Versa SL we tested starts at $16,320. For that scratch you get a pretty well-equipped car, with front foglights, alloy wheels, 60/40 rear seats, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, cruise control, power windows and locks, and Nissan's CVT. Step down to the SV at $15,320 and you lose the alloys,...

First Drive: 2012 Nissan Versa Sedan
At 6 feet, 6 inches tall, my half-Norwegian, half-Swedish co-pilot is no small gentleman. At 175.4 inches long, 66.7 inches wide, and 59.6 inches tall, the 2012 Nissan Versa is a relatively small five-passenger sedan. Yet surprisingly, the two work well together. He fits inside the popular B-segment car and his neck isn't kinked at nearly 90 degrees. We're both quite comfortable in the new Nissan.

Comfort was one of four main areas Nissan engineers fast-tracked for improvement on the new Versa. Efficiency, style, and value were the other three as the Versa's engineers built an all-new car from the ground up.

Producing a spacious cabin and significantly smoother ride that felt more like a...

First Test: 2012 Hyundai Accent SE
With all the adulation the automotive press has been heaping on the dashing new Hyundai Elantra and Sonata over the past year -- including our recent crowning of the new 2012 Elantra as the compact segment's crème de la crème -- we bet some of you are thinking Hyundai is a tad bit overexposed lately. Jumped the shark, perhaps?

Better break out the water skis, Fonzie, because the all-new 2012 Hyundai Accent has landed. Hyundai's economy car veteran has taken a couple of pages from the playbooks of its bigger brothers in hopes of more exposure and sales success: more "Fluidic Sculpture" sheetmetal, more features, more power, more miles per gallon. The entry price point goes up, too, but that's...

First Drive: 2012 Hyundai Accent
Ford and Chevy have just buzzed into the B-segment hive, but Hyundai has been hanging around it for some time now. The Korean brand's B-segment car, the Accent, has long been an easy choice for budget-constrained first-time buyers. Now that Ford has re-entered the subcompact segment after two decades, and Chevrolet has finally gotten serious with its new Sonic, Hyundai has redesigned its subcompact with stylish sheetmetal worthy of sharing showroom space with the new Elantra and Sonata. Until the 2012 model year, the Accent's most attractive styling came from the window stickers listing the manufacturer's suggested list price and the EPA fuel mileage.

Those labels still look good. While Ford...

First Look: 2012 Kia Rio
We got a glimpse of Kia's new Rio in hatchback form at the recent Geneva auto show, and the beat goes on this week in New York with the arrival of the U.S. market 2012 Kia Rio sedan and Rio5 hatch. The Rio was the lone Kia product that had not received a full makeover from head stylist Peter Schreyer, whose recent eye-catching designs include the new Optima and Sportage small SUV.

Whereas the all-new 2012 Hyundai Accent, Korea's other subcompact on display at New York, features Hyundai's new "fluidic sculpture" corporate design language, the Rio has a more minimalist, sporty European flavor, no doubt a nod to Schreyer's former Audi experience. From the rear, the Rio five-door shows a strong...

First Look: 2012 Hyundai Accent
A long-neglected segment in the U.S. market, the subcompact scene has suddenly gotten very interesting. First came Honda's second-generation Fit, which set the bar for the other contenders. Then, Ford's Euro-cutie 2011 Fiesta made its stateside debut, followed shortly thereafter by its distant cousin, the Mazda2. All along, Hyundai's Accent soldiered on as competent, if somewhat unremarkable, contender in the segment. Its competitiveness in the U.S. market was also hampered by the lack of a five-door configuration.

Now that Hyundai has finally gained respectability with consumers and critics with such models as the Genesis, Equus, Sonata, and new Elantra, the automaker is looking to dominate...
