First Drive: Honda Fit Shuttle Hybrid
Like much of Japan's industry, Honda's operations were massively disrupted after the March earthquake and tsunami, and new model launches were delayed. The super-sized Fit's debut was knocked back three months, and production temporarily relocated from the earthquake-damaged Saitama plant near Tokyo to Honda's Suzuka plant some 250 miles to the west. Now that things are back on track, we had a chance to take the Shuttle for a spin.

Based on the current model Fit's platform, with its superb center tank layout and low, flat floor, the Fit Shuttle is basically a Fit with a bigger, heavier body. It also inherits the 1.3-liter hybrid and 1.5-liter gas engines. In Japan at least, all models come...

First Drive: 2011 Honda Fit Hybrid
This is the final piece in the Fit puzzle we've been waiting for -- the Honda Fit Hybrid. It's the third hybrid from Honda in as many years, after the Insight and CR-Z. According to chief engineer Kohei Hitomi, Honda wanted to test the hybrid waters before launching a gas-electric version of its hugely popular Fit. Consider them tested.

But according to Honda America, the Fit Hybrid, which just recently debuted in Europe (where it's known as the Jazz) isn't destined for U.S. shores. That's a shame, because it's an engineering marvel, the best of the recent Honda hybrid trio. The Fit Hybrid's 1.3-liter powerplant and IMA system sit snugly inside the tiny engine bay, and, more to the point,...

Comparison: 2011 Ford Fiesta SES vs 2010 Honda Fit Sport vs 2010 Toyota Yaris vs 2010 Nissan Versa 1.8 SL
Having vanquished the Old World to become the best-selling car in Europe, Ford's Fiesta has been readying its attack on our shores via some seriously subversive methods. Last year, for instance, Ford dropped 100 Fiestas behind our lines as part of its Fiesta Movement campaign. And insidiously, each of its lucky drivers was issued a video camera, with the resulting propaganda injected into the minds of our tender youth via such "alternative portals" as Facebook and Current TV. What's next? Fiesta sleeper cells? Maybe.

We say: Ford, stop all this nefarious skulking in the shadows. The Fiesta needs to come out into the open and subject itself to a proper comparison test like a real car.

So...

First Drive: 2011 Mini Countryman S All4
What would Issigonis think?

Sir Alec Issigonis was the irascible genius behind the world's most famous motorized munchkin, the original, 1959 Mini. And standing next its comparatively enormous descendant -- the new Countryman -- left me feeling sort of like John Stewart recently on the "Daily Show" when he held an iPad up to his head, as if he were on an iPhone. "I actually just use it to pretend to my children that I'm shrinking", he quipped.

How big can a Mini get before the FTC steps in to investigate it as a misrepresentation? A car capable of wearing BMW 5-Series rolling stock is a big automobile to be called a mini-anything. And yet...

I suspect Sir Alec might approve of it anyway...

2011 Honda CR-Z: The Affordable Honda Sports Car Returns as Hybrid?
Honda's CRX, the wedgy, two-seat, extraordinarily-entertaining sports hatchback, left us in 1992. Its replacement was a far less practical targa roof model called the Del Sol that didn't sell very well and ultimately killed the model. Finally, Honda has a proper CRX replacement, the upcoming 2011 CR-Z. Like the first CRX, it's a two-seat hatchback, but it dramatically departs from the original formula. When it goes on sale later this summer, the CR-Z will be available as only a gas-electric hybrid, with a powertrain that employs Honda's Integrated Motor Assist architecture. This elegantly simple arrangement sandwiches an electric motor between the engine and transmission. The gas engine is a...

2011 Ford Fiesta Preview 2009 LA Auto Show
The new Ford Fiesta will soon be joining the ranks populated by the likes of the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, and Toyota Yaris. And as the B-car segment heats up, an unofficial foot race between the Fiesta and its corporate cousin, the Mazda2, should offer an interesting experiment in shared-platform competition.

The Fiesta has moved over 500,000 units globally using the same underpinnings as the Mazda. But it hasn't been offered in the U.S. since 1980—a span of almost three decades. To reinvigorate interest in the new model, Ford launched a marketing drive of epic proportions 11 months in advance of the car's release. Putting 100 test cars in the hands of "socially vibrant" drivers, Ford encouraged...
