First Drive: 2012 Toyota Camry
Is the 2012 Toyota Camry new and special enough to vanquish the Hyundai Sonata? Is the SE model a poor man's sport sedan? Is Toyota's rebound in J.D. Power & Associates' initial quality rankings, and the company's vindication over specious unintended acceleration claims, enough to warrant purchase consideration? Do you experience headaches, dizziness, or nausea when driven swiftly in a sports car?

If you've answered, "Well, heck, yes!" to any of these questions, get ready for a quiz in which we determine whether you'd notice an all-new seventh-generation model if it used your driveway for a U-turn.

Here are some study materials: Camrys traditionally run two cycles on one platform, and...

Long Term Update 1: 2011 Honda Odyssey
As our 2011 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite is getting settled into our long-term fleet, it's the little things that start becoming more apparent. One of the features I've noticed, which I really appreciate, is the power doors (and honestly, what minivan doesn't come with that option nowadays?). The nice thing about these power doors is you can turn the car on or off during the opening or closing of the doors, and they finish their operation without any hesitation. That's more than I can say for other minivans.

The backup sensors, multi-view rear-view camera, and Blind Spot Information System are especially welcome additions to a vehicle this size; however, with the incredible visibility afforded...

First Drive: Ariel Atom 3 Mugen Edition
While a thousand cars is a day's worth of Camry sales, that number represents an astounding decade's worth of success for Britain's tiny Ariel Motors, builder of the astoundingly original Atom. Call it specialized, call it user-hostile -- you can also call the Atom some of the most fun you can have on four wheels.

The Atom has succeeded because Ariel is a lean, well-run little company. It has even managed to internationalize, with a manufacturing license in the U.S. through Virginia's TMI AutoTech. But the Atom also has succeeded it's a simple, focused concept, beautifully executed. It does one job, and it does it fabulously well.

It accelerates, brakes, and corners like few other street-legal...

Arrival: 2011 Honda Odyssey Touring
No sooner had we said goodbye to our Volkswagen Routan than a new 2011 Honda Odyssey joined our garage. It came loaded with the Touring Elite package with leather interior, navigation with voice recognition, rear-seat entertainment system with a 16.2-inch split screen, and a cool box in the center stack. At the test track, the 248-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 gave us a 7.4-second 0-60-mph run, and it is expected to return 19/28 mpg city/highway. The family-hauler'sall-new exterior styling has received mixed reviews, especially for its "lightning bolt" beltline and gaping sliding door channel.

So why would the Motor Trend staff-especially the photographers-be excited about getting a minivan, of...

Verdict: 2010 Honda Accord Crosstour 4WD
In a landslide vote, the staff has declared the Accord Crosstour an ugly vehicle. The staff later declared that tires are round and proper martinis are made with gin. All foregone conclusions, yes, but each equally worthy of our consideration.

In truth, the Crosstour's appearance was discussed more than any other aspect of the car. Nearly every log entry mentions it, and the entries are rarely flattering. Whether it's the Zamboni nose or the tucked-up tail, or the fact that those two don't work together at all, the staff had plenty to say about the Crosstour's sheetmetal. So there, we've made our case.

There's far more to a car than its outward appearance, and, once our editors stopped carping...

Verdict: 2010 Volkswagen Routan SEL
The Volkswagen Routan isn't like every other minivan on the market today -- it's like two other minivans. With the structure of the Dodge Grand Caravan/Chrysler Town & Country beneath its shiny new skin, the Routan is a mixture of Teutonic ingenuity and Canadian build quality. The result is a baffling vehicle with both eye-popping improvements over the Chrysler duo and forehead-slapping oversights.

Whether or not you agree with VW's decision to restyle its competitor's minivan for the U.S. market rather than build its own from scratch, the German brand did manage to get at least one thing right about the Routan: This people-mover is better-looking than either Chrysler product. Staffers praised...

First Drive: Honda Fit Shuttle Hybrid
Like much of Japan's industry, Honda's operations were massively disrupted after the March earthquake and tsunami, and new model launches were delayed. The super-sized Fit's debut was knocked back three months, and production temporarily relocated from the earthquake-damaged Saitama plant near Tokyo to Honda's Suzuka plant some 250 miles to the west. Now that things are back on track, we had a chance to take the Shuttle for a spin.

Based on the current model Fit's platform, with its superb center tank layout and low, flat floor, the Fit Shuttle is basically a Fit with a bigger, heavier body. It also inherits the 1.3-liter hybrid and 1.5-liter gas engines. In Japan at least, all models come...

Long Term Update 5: 2011 Mazda2
Overall, I'm still liking the peppy Mazda2, but on a couple of occasions last month, the little green machine fell short. The first time was when planning a trip to Needles, California, a four-hour-plus drive from Los Angeles. There was no way that a female friend, and a guy friend, and I could cram ourselves and enough luggage for a beach weekend into the '2, and when it comes to ride quality, it far from resembles sitting atop a cloud of marshmallow fluff. Plus we didn't quite know how to get where we were going (it has no nav), and on the way back my husband wanted to listen to his beloved Detroit Tigers, and the '2 doesn't have XM satellite radio. Hello, Honda Odyssey.

The second time was...

First Drive: Honda CR-Z Mugen
When we first laid eyes on the clenched-fist styling of the Honda CR-Z we thought it had potential. But when we discovered it produced only 122 hp from its gas engine and electric motor combined, our enthusiasm waned. Something that looks this exciting, and has such a capable chassis underneath it, deserves more power.

Well, give it up for Mugen Euro, the U.K.-based subsidiary of the official Honda tuner, which spotted the CR-Z's potential and turned our desires into reality. This is the Honda CR-Z Mugen, a 200-hp hybrid coupe than retains the standard car's fuel economy in Eco and Normal modes, but when you push the button marked Mugen, it unleashes its inner beast.

 Rather than throwing...

First Test: 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid
The big fallacy regarding Korean cars goes something like this: Korean vehicles are cheaply priced and built. Kia is a Korean automaker. Therefore, all Kias are attractively priced but questionably constructed. As the company's first dedicated ecocar, the 2011 Optima Hybrid is yet another stab at debunking that fallacy.

Starting from $27,250 (including a $750 destination and handling fee), the Optima Hybrid is one of the most expensive Kias you can get today. Comfortably equipped from the get-go, our tester arrived with the optional $5000 Hybrid Premium Technology Package, bringing the cost to $32,250 and adding features like a panoramic sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, HID headlights, and an...
