Quick Drive: 2013 Mazda CX-5 Prototype
REYKJAVIK, ICELAND -- "Skyactiv" finally makes sense. This October, an updated, 40-mpg (highway) Mazda3 with the brand's new gas direct-injection, 2.0-liter four, and six-speed manual or automatic gets the Skyactiv badge thanks to all those goodies. Afterwards, only Mazda's all-new models will wear the badge, which will be used in a manner similar to Mercedes-Benz's Bluetec and Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive. It's a green-branding ploy.

Unlike either of those two automakers, Mazda is too small to get into hybrids or any type of advanced electric/battery powertrains. The strategy is to concentrate on what most experts say will continue to be the mainstream technology: highly evolved internal...

First Test: 2012 Ford Explorer EcoBoost
Last time we had our hands on the new Ford Explorer, it finished sixth out of six in our seven-row SUV comparison test. Yes, friends, dead last. But that car was a preproduction vehicle, and quite literally fell apart on us. This time around, by dint of its new 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, I think the Explorer would have placed lower. Like below a city bus. Yes, my kneecaps are thankful Harry Bennett is dead.

"It's just such inefficient packaging," crowed bossman Angus MacKenzie as we stood contemplating Ford's big-on-the-outside, cramped-on-the-inside kiddie hauler. What exactly is so wrong with it? "It's intellectually dishonest," continued Angus. "It looks roomy, but it's not. It looks sporty,...

First Drive: 2012 Toyota Camry
Is the 2012 Toyota Camry new and special enough to vanquish the Hyundai Sonata? Is the SE model a poor man's sport sedan? Is Toyota's rebound in J.D. Power & Associates' initial quality rankings, and the company's vindication over specious unintended acceleration claims, enough to warrant purchase consideration? Do you experience headaches, dizziness, or nausea when driven swiftly in a sports car?

If you've answered, "Well, heck, yes!" to any of these questions, get ready for a quiz in which we determine whether you'd notice an all-new seventh-generation model if it used your driveway for a U-turn.

Here are some study materials: Camrys traditionally run two cycles on one platform, and...

First Drive: 2012 Kia Rio
During the driving portion of the 2012 Kia Rio press presentation in South Korea, we visited a phallic-themed, public rest area located off National Route 44. Thankfully there weren't any live ones, but you couldn't escape the wooden and stone phalluses and trinkets standing at attention in the parking lot and gift shop. After distancing ourselves from the giggling European vacationers, we asked about the location's significance.

Our Kia hosts didn't have a backstory for us, and not wanting a nastygram from our IT folks, we didn't attempt to Google from Korea. But we do have answers about the new 2012 Rio, which, like a particular rest stop now seared into memory, is designed to stand out...

First Test: 2012 Nissan Versa SL
The Nissan Versa has always been marketed as one of the cheapest new cars in America -- a budget-conscious consumer's delight. The all-new 2012 Nissan Versa is no exception. Nissan's ads proclaim it as having "the most space per dollar of any car in America," comparing its rear legroom to that of a Mercedes E-Class. In an increasingly competitive segment, is that really enough?

The top-of-the-line 2012 Nissan Versa SL we tested starts at $16,320. For that scratch you get a pretty well-equipped car, with front foglights, alloy wheels, 60/40 rear seats, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, cruise control, power windows and locks, and Nissan's CVT. Step down to the SV at $15,320 and you lose the alloys,...

First Drive: 2012 Buick Regal GS
On paper, Buick seems to have applied the rice-rocket treatment to its popular Regal to create this new GS model. It's taken a tiny, 2.0-liter four-cylinder and turbocharged and intercooled the bejeebers out of it to produce 270 horsepower and an even hairier 295 lb-ft of twist; bolted on paving-stone-sized front brake rotors (14.0 inches in diameter, 1.2 inches thick) clamped by impressive-looking Brembo four-piston calipers; starched up the suspension with stiffer springs, anti-roll bars, and (adjustable) Sachs shocks; and dolled up the exterior with more aggressive fascias, rocker panel extensions, and a spoiler. That looks like a recipe for a raucous, rambunctious, torque-steering screaming...

Long Term Update 2: 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD
Last month, I had several questions about the burn-off system the Silverado HD's diesel uses to get rid of particulates collected by the Diesel Particulate Filter. I wanted to know what physically occurs when burn-off happens, and when the best time is for burn-off to occur, questions that are new ones for anyone who drives one of the DPF diesels from Ford or Chevrolet. And I got some answers from GM, specifically from Gary Arvan, Chief Engineer, Duramax. He explains, "The idle rpm is elevated during "regeneration," which is a term used to describe the warm up, sustained high temperature to oxidize soot, and cooldown of the DPF catalyst. For the LML engine, the idle rpm goes from 640 rpm during...

First Test: 2011 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson Edition
The truck's styling also is just as proudly old school. Its silver body (black is the only other color offered for 2011) was given set of orange stripes along the sides and on the hood, with engine turning metallic-looking swirls inside. There are Harley-Davidson logos and shields throughout the truck -- everywhere from the wheels, to the seats, to a gigantic one on the bedliner -- totaling 19 in all. Inside, the theme continues, with black leather covering the seats, plus brushed aluminum and chrome, and lots of Harley accents throughout. Even the storage areas on the backs of the front seats use horizontal zippers, reminiscent of leather biker jackets. There is more engine turning on the center...

First Test: 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec
Twenty Benjamins. Two large. Two thousand dollars. Any way you put it, throwing that much cash on top of the Genesis 4.6's $44,500 base price gets you a Hyundai sedan unlike any other. The new 2012 Hyundai Genesis 5.0 R-Spec touts more power, promises stickier grip, and has the most inappropriate name in Hyundai's modern-day lineup.

Despite what its label may conjure in enthusiasts' minds, the R-Spec isn't a sedan designed to embarrass the curvy-road combatants from Mercedes AMG, Cadillac V, and BMW M. No, the Genesis 5.0 R-Spec is more a sport model than 'Ring racer. That's that.

But the R-Spec is a step in the right direction. It gives the standard Genesis much-needed injections of athleticism...

First Test: 2011 Ford F-150 Lariat EcoBoost
When the 2009 F-150 won Truck of the Year, the biggest shortcoming was its engines. It seemed like the 4.6-liter and 5.4-liter V-8s had been around forever, the only changes being the addition of a three-valve 4.6-liter. And, depending on the engine, the transmission was either a four- or six-speed automatic. After some major housecleaning for 2011, there are four new engines: a 3.7-liter V-6, 5.0-liter V-8, 6.2-liter V-8, and a 3.5-liter, 365-horsepower, 420-pound-foot twin-turbo EcoBoost, and all four are backed by the same six-speed automatic.

The twin-turbo isn't the largest displacement engine available -- those honors go to the 6.2-liter V-8 that's standard in the Raptor, Lariat Limited,...
