Arrival: 2011 Infiniti QX56 4WD
Does the world need a better Cadillac Escalade? That's the question we'll ask ourselves for the next 12 months as we run around the country in our newest long-termer, the 2011 Infiniti QX56. While the latest and largest from Infiniti didn't win our SUV of the Year calipers, it did well enough in the competition for us to hound Infiniti into giving us one for a year. In other words, we like it.

But do we need it? Turn the dial back about 18 months to the days of $5/gallon gas here in Southern California, and the idea of a vehicle with an observed fuel economy of 12.2 mpg would have been obscene. But now, in 2011, with gas prices lower and stabilized, such figures register as only borderline...

First Test: 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon
The existence of the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon -- a brazen, wonderful, and bewildering thing -- is a miracle. Pointless excess manifested onto four wheels, this 556-horsepower creature, equipped with a manual transmission, has the appeal of a 72-ounce steak that you have to eat in an improbably short amount of time to get it free. Its awesomeness is strangely addictive; people watch Man vs. Food, after all. And they enjoy it.

The Caddy's ingredients may lack the preposterous quantities in the overweight cheeseburgers on that show, but they nonetheless astonish:
1 CTS Sport Wagon1 6.2-liter V-81 supercharger1 six-speed manual transmission

Directions: Blend. Garnish with Magnetic Ride...

Verdict: 2009 Audi A4 Avant Quattro
It's time to officially put the wagon on the U.S. endangered vehicle species list.

Just this year, we learned that Volvo's new V60 won't be making the trip stateside, nor will the BMW 5 Series Estate. But despite the bad news, Cadillac is boldly going where other U.S. automakers are no longer going with its new CTS Sport Wagon. And the Germans, bless their hearts, continue to bring over (at least for now) models like the Audi A4 Avant quattro. Alas, we recently said farewell to a 2009 Avant quattro after just over a year in the MT fleet.

The A4 Avant pretty much won over the entire staff during its 23,924 trouble-free miles with us (okay, a balky power tailgate needed a quick adjustment...

First Test: 2011 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG
I recently had the pleasure of batting and booting the 2011 Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG with the uncorked Performance Package option around the Hudson River Valley in Upstate New York. The twin-turbo, direct-injected 5.5-liter V-8 brawler of a motor serves up a spine-compressing 563 horsepower and an astonishing 664 pound-feet of torque. The car is so powerful it's silly. Remember, the Cadillac CTS-V makes just 556 horsepower and more than 100 pound-feet less torque (551 lb-ft). But there's something...missing from the new AMG twin-turbo engine. Something...lacking. Something...something that's really hard to place your finger upon. And I think I know what it is, or at least what it might be.

What...

First Look: 2011 Saab 9-4x
The new Saab 9-4x luxury crossover enters a segment ripe with competition, with the best from Europe, Japan, and the U.S. battling for supremacy. The question is, can Saab regain its mojo with a product based on the Cadillac SRX?

Certainly the 9-4x, which will make its debut at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, has an elegant design, but it takes more than just quality styling and an ignition switch located between the front seats to make a Saab. Whether engineers were successful in making the driving experience significantly different from the Cadillac SRX will be crucial to the 9-4x's identity and consumer reception.

As is the case with its platform, the 9-4x's engines are shared with GM's...

First Drive: 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid
As has happened with quite a few Ford products recently, within several hundred feet of driving away in the 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid I blanched slightly. Once again, this definitely was not what I was expecting. Back there -- glancing in the mirror to where I slipped the shifter into Drive a few moments ago -- I thought this was going to be a very predictable, write-by-numbers kinda story. Re-wrapped Fusion Hybrid, Lincoln-esque styling, a couple of upgraded features. Slam dunk. Simple.

Not so simple. Unlike Cadillac, which has taken the laudable (and more expensive) approach of creating models that are often noticeably differentiated from their GM brethren, Lincoln appears to have no reservations...

Comparison: 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe vs 2010 Infiniti G37 Coupe
The last time the Infiniti G37 Coupe went head-to-head against a competitor in an MT test, it scored an upset victory against the longtime luxury sport coupe champ, the BMW 3 Series. That was approximately three years ago. Since then, the G has received several incremental improvements. So when we found both a 2011 G37 two-door and Cadillac's new 2011 CTS Coupe in our garage at the same time -- similarly equipped, at that -- we decided to pit the two against each other in a good-old-fashioned vehicular duel.

Similarities between the two coupes abound. Both are rear-drive 2+2s fitted with naturally aspirated V-6 engines good for more than 300 horsepower. Each car has nearly 50/50 weight distribution...

First Test: 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe
We're in tough company: A couple of Bugatti Veyrons and a Lamborghini Reventon roadster jostle with a Ferrari 458 Italia and a 599 GTO. A Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG leads various Maserati Gran Turismos, a brace of Alfa Romeo 8Cs, and a white Lexus LFA. And at the head of the line is the new McLaren MP4-12C, making its world debut in the same shade of orange the Bruce and Denny Show used to paint their Can-Am-conquering M8 racers back in the '60s. At the wheel is current F1 world champion Jenson Button.

The 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe I'm driving is also making its world debut here in the Supercar Run at Britain's astonishing Goodwood Festival of Speed, the world's greatest car show. This will be...

First Drive: 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe
The last time Cadillac sold a true coupe, Saddam Hussein was still in charge of Iraq. The last time the storied brand offered a genuinely sporty one? Try never. No, the deceased XLR doesn't count -- that was a drop-top roadster. And yet, the recent lack of experience building two-doors didn’t stop the Wreath-and-Crest brand from making the 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe an absolute blast to drive. Granted, they already had a solid palate to work with in the form of the CTS sedan -- our 2008 Motor Trend Car of the Year.

There's only one engine available in the Coupe: the 304-horsepower, 273-pound-foot direct-injected 3.6-liter V-6. It has a great torque curve and is never short on power, provided...
