First Test: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8
The traditional performance plan for Jeeps was to unbolt, unzip, unsnap, and otherwise dismount every component that wasn't necessary, then mount the biggest knobby tires possible and head for the hills. The SRT guys have gone the opposite direction by throwing technology and fat, sticky Italian tires at a Jeep to create a whole different monster. While the Grand Cherokee SRT8 may not have the precision of its Hemi-fied siblings, it might be even more fun. Throwing this 5200-pound SUV around corners gives you the same guilty pleasure as finishing a meal that earns you a T-shirt.

The big Jeep likes to be manhandled and tossed around. It will respond to smooth inputs, but it will return equal...

First Drive: 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 & Dodge Charger SRT8
A 4300-pound sedan should not look appropriate on a racetrack. Yet here we are, at the fittingly named Big track at Willow Springs, with the new SRT8 versions of the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger. These gloriously wide, big, bold, and heavy mechanical twins drip with unabashed swagger. If there's one truth, it's that they'll never be mistaken for anything plebeian.

Another truth we must discuss: These two still rely on the same five-speed automatic as their predecessors, and with this transmission come the complaints we've repeated in this space -- delayed response and disappointing shift quality. In its defense, the inexpensive transmission is a proven, hardworking unit, handling heavy power...

First Test: 2011 Chrysler 300 Limited
Go ahead. Swoon over the deep burble and ample torque emanating from the 300C's big V-8. We can wait. When you're done, reality is waiting with the V-6-powered 300. Don't fret. While the base car may lack the degree of silliness that comes with a 363-horsepower family sedan, it makes up with a commonly overlooked but crucial element: value.

First, what you lose, along with the "C" moniker: Jettisoning the V-8 drops 246 pounds from the curb weight and $11,000 from the window sticker. Indeed, engine output suffers, but only by 71 horsepower. Acceleration remains respectable; reaching 60 mph in 7.2 seconds means the portly 300 will show its taillights to V-6 Dodge Chargers and turbo Buick Regals.

 If...

First Drive: 2011 Dodge Charger Prototype
As Chrysler pulls itself back from the brink for the eleventy-seventh time, it's poised to roll out 16 new or significantly revamped cars in the coming months, six of which will be Dodges. Most will wear the brand's remodeled crosshair grille, and all will be better differentiated from their Chrysler siblings in terms of ride, handling, and basic attitude. Leading this charge is the refreshingly reskinned Charger.

"They named the last Charger after we'd designed it," notes Ralph Gilles, who now serves as both CEO of the Dodge car brand and the corporation's senior VP of design. "This time we designed a Charger." Indeed, many of the '69 Charger-inspired design cues seem to have been lifted directly...

First Look: 2011 Dodge Charger
Mopar fans, your refreshed family chariot has arrived. The 2011 Dodge Charger -- the muscle car coupe turned four-door family sedan with an attitude -- has been finally revealed by Dodge after months of speculation.

Beneath the Charger's expansive hood, the main news is the arrival of the corporate 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 for the base SE and mid-level Rallye trims -- ditching the underpowered and unloved 2.7- and 3.5-liter six-cylinders in the process. Final power specifications haven't been disclosed, but the new V-6 is rated at 290 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque in other Chrysler applications. The 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 returns to the R/T model with FuelSaver Technology, the trade name...

First Look: 2012 Ford Taurus and Explorer Police Interceptor
Much to the dismay of police departments nationwide, rear-wheel-drive, V-8-powered body-on-frame sedans are done. Ford Motor Company's mainstay cop car has finally gone to that great taxicab-used car lot in the sky. But you better believe Dearborn desperately wants to hold on to the 70 percent of the law enforcement fleet business it owned during the heyday of the outgoing Panther-platform Crown Victoria.

To fight off the Dodge Charger Interceptor, Chevrolet's Impala and Tahoe, and the coming Chevy Caprice and Carbon Motors efforts, Ford is marketing its new Taurus- and Explorer-based Police Interceptors for their safety and tight handling. The '11 unibody Police Interceptors -- the new Explorer...
