First Test: 2011 Saab 9-4x
Motor Trend, or Motor Trend Classic? If Saab doesn't restart production in Trollhatten by the end of August, the print version of this story ought to be published in the latter. Although the 9-4x is the only Saab built outside of Sweden -- it's built in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, alongside the Cadillac SRX -- its future depends on Saab's flagging fortunes.

The Caddy version of this Epsilon II/Theta-based, transverse-engine, all-wheel-drive crossover has been on the market a year, enough time for GM to spend some cash on much-needed chassis upgrades and a new engine. For 2012, the SRX comes only with the 308-horsepower, 3.6-liter direct injection V-6, replacing the 3.0-liter. The underdeveloped,...

First Drive: 2012 Cadillac SRX
My fellow editors weren't too kind to the Cadillac SRX when they first sampled the crossover in 2009, dinging the 2.8-liter turbo-six's lackluster performance and the suspension's jittery ride. Customers apparently felt the same way -- at least about the 2.8-liter -- which is gone and won't be missed. Despite the early hiccups, the SRX was Cadillac's best-selling model in 2010 and only slightly behind the CTS so far in 2011. We're betting the soon-to-arrive 2012 Cadillac SRX we just took for a spin will push it back to the top in no time.

On the engine side, the 3.0-liter six is also gone, at least in the U.S. (it remains in export models due to displacement-related taxes in several overseas...

First Drive: 2011 Saab 9-4X
We learned three things about Saab after hanging out with its 9-4x team for a few days in Washington, D.C. One: You have to be taller than 6-foot-3 to work there. Two: You have to be an engineer. (They did bring a marketing guy from Sweden, but it turns out he is an engineer as well.) Three: You have to be an optimist.

Saab has had a pretty tough decade. Becoming wholly owned by General Motors in 2000 after a decade of partial ownership, it has struggled on both marketing and manufacturing fronts. Tight finances demanded shared platforms, which made it difficult to build traditional Saab products. Small budgets made it nearly impossible to achieve the marketing penetration necessary for Saab...

First Look: 2011 Saab 9-4x
The new Saab 9-4x luxury crossover enters a segment ripe with competition, with the best from Europe, Japan, and the U.S. battling for supremacy. The question is, can Saab regain its mojo with a product based on the Cadillac SRX?

Certainly the 9-4x, which will make its debut at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, has an elegant design, but it takes more than just quality styling and an ignition switch located between the front seats to make a Saab. Whether engineers were successful in making the driving experience significantly different from the Cadillac SRX will be crucial to the 9-4x's identity and consumer reception.

As is the case with its platform, the 9-4x's engines are shared with GM's...
